Your QUT Graduation Day

October 9, 2019 2 By Stanley Isaacs

So you’ve made it…. The long days, the late night, the exams the assignments You’re finally here, Graduation night But what does that mean? Well we’re going to show you what to expect at your graduation ceremony. So let’s go. Today we’re going to follow the journey of
a soon to be Graduate This is Brittany, our graduand for today. How are you feeling? I’m really excited! I’m glad my family are coming but I’m a little nervous to move across the stage! All right, no worries, so let’s go the Stage Door! Graduation day is a very busy day so that’s why it’s important to arrive TWO HOURS before your allocated ceremony time. QPAC is in the heart of Southbank with lots
of restaurants and cafes, so please make sure you have eaten and are well hydrated before you arrive as there may not be time once at the venue. Start here at the Concert Hall Stage Door
which is where you’ll begin your Graduation. On arrival, you’ll need these three things: A printed or electronic version of your Graduation Confirmation Academic Dress Hire receipt and your Student ID or Photo ID Proceed through here to the Check-in Desk and check your name off the list. You’ll be given a card that has your seat
number on it and remember this number on it- remember this number! If you don’t check in, Ceremony Staff won’t
know you’ve arrived, and your name will not be called out during the presentation. Registration is the most important part of
this process. This is also the perfect time to let staff
know if you require special assistance to cross the stage. Hi Brittany, how’s it going? Hi, great- we’re nearly done! So this is Ebony, she is one of the Academic Robe Hire Gown Staff Members And they are here today to talk to us about what is Academic attire. So first of all, can you explain the outfit? Yeah sure, so we’ll start at the top- this
is a Mortarboard or the Graduation Cap that the students wear. You can see that the tassel is on the right
hand side and once they graduate, we move it to the left. This is their graduating hood- they’re different colours, depending on the faculty. Brittany is in Business so hers is a nice blue. We also have Science and Engineering which is teal. Creative Industries, which is hot pink. Education, which is green Health, which is a goldy-yellow and then the faculty of Law is silver. What what should graduates keep in mind when they’re looking at what to wear for the graduation ceremony? Well, we always tell them to wear professional appropriate attire because it is quite a formal event. What Brittany is wearing is great, it’s a
nice length. Students should also be mindful of the length
of their clothing because they do have to walk a lot of stairs and depending on where they’re sitting in the grandstand, it could be quite high up. Also as far as footwear- students should wear
something comfortable- once again the stairs and they also have to cross the entire stage as well. Fantastic! Thank you. That’s okay! After robing, you are welcome to mingle with
your family and friends outside until called for the graduand-on-stage-briefing. This will be about 50 minutes before the start of the ceremony. You’ll be guided through to the Concert Hall backstage, where you’ll be shown where to find your seat. Make sure you’re sitting in
the right number as the name presentations are in seat order. During the briefing you’ll be given instructions
on what will happen on stage and about what we call the Doff-Shake-Take, doff the Chancellor,
shake their hand and take your parchment. If you’re sitting in an end row, a staff member
in the wings will indicate when it’s time for your row to leave, ready for your presentation. Make sure you stay in your order otherwise
you’ll receive someone else’s parchment. Gowning staff will also adjust your gown here to make sure it’s worn properly and so you lovely when crossing the stage. Your real and official parchment is then presented
to you on stage, please keep this in mind for post-ceremony plans as parchment are very important and are easily damaged if not taken care of. When instructed to do so, you can then walk out on stage and do the Doff-Shake-Take to receive your parchment. When you get back to your seat, move your
tassel to the left to signify you’ve graduated. Once all students have their parchments, you
can leave the auditorium as a fancy graduate and join your guests to celebrate your enormous
achievement. If you’re after official photography, studios
will be located throughout the Concert Hall side of QPAC on various levels. There will be queues but these move fairly
quickly so you’ll get some great shots. Once again, congratulations! You’re now free to spend the evening with
your family and friends. Please remember to return your robe to the robing area within one hour of the end of the ceremony.
