Why We Need to Fund Community Colleges – Hjordys Perez Matos

I am a first-generation college student and like many others, struggled at first with finding my voice in higher education as I brought my family and myself
through the journey of attaining a college degree. I did not have means to buy all of my books for some of my more advanced classes and found it difficult to find copies of the most
current editions of assigned texts in our library where I would spend hours,
making copies of pages for my readings. There were also times, as have been
previously mentioned, where I did struggle with nutrition on campus. Actually, one in two LaGuardia students do so I’m not alone in this. I know what it means to eat healthy. Try selling a healthy meal to a struggling student who already has to worry about whether or not her MetroCard has
sufficient funds in it to get to class. I felt like all of a sudden I wasn’t surviving
any more, I was thriving and I knew it was not because
I all of a sudden had this miraculous perseverance dropped on me I knew that the only difference was the type of resources that were
being provided to me. Gosh, if you heard what I was able to do without the resources,
and once I was given the resources, can you imagine what we’re
able to do for so many more? So for them, and the thousands more, I say: fund us, and you fund something so much more.
