What’s Up with York Colleges? | #YORK101 Colleges

– When every incoming York University student gets accepted they’ll be assigned to a college. – Can we know what you’re thinking — isn’t York a University? Why are students assigned to a college and which college do I belong to? – Well, you’ll have the questions and we got the answers. Get ready for our 3 facts about colleges at York! – Hi I’m Mayu. – And I’m Kabi. Okay, so let’s explain colleges to you. – So, you’ve probably watched or read the Harry Potter series, right? – So everyone in Harry Potter attends a big school called Hogwarts, and all those students are assigned to one of four houses. Gryffindor Slytherin Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff – Just like that. Here at York. We actually have houses of our own, but instead of calling them houses. We call them colleges. So this leads us to fact number 1. Every new undergraduate student is assigned to a college when they enter York based on their program of study So for instance, I study Commerce, so I’m in New College. – And I study human rights and equity studies, so I’m in Founders College. – And here in York. There are actually 9 colleges and they are — Bethune Calumet Founders Glendon McLaughlin New College Stong Vanier and Winters. Fact number 2. Your College is a smaller community within the larger York community. – Because York can be such a huge campus. It can get overwhelming. So, your college can actually give you a sense of belonging. – Exactly, they also provide you with the opportunity to make connections attend social events run by your own College Council and participate and intramural sports. – And you’ll have access to peer mentor programs and students spaces. So, if you need a place to study or to chill with your friends. – And FYI, orientation week is run through your colleges. So we recommend that, that is a great place for you to start your journey. Lassonde and Schulich also have their own orientation programming in addition to your colleges orientation programming and for you to find out more about that and all else about orientation Make sure to visit the orientation website down below. – Fact number 3, you can actually switch your college affiliation after orientation, but remember, you only do it once in any academic year. – So that wraps up our 3 facts to keep in mind about colleges here at York.
