Western Technical College is named one of 2015’s best community colleges. A new study ranked 670 community colleges across the country . putting Western Technical College as one of the top 50. News 8’s Keely Arthur joins us with the details. Mike, The study ranked schools based on things like experience in the classroom, and outcomes in education and careers. I spoke with school officials to see how they achieved high marks in each of those catagories. Gary Brown is a technical college success story. I am a very non-traditional learner and I’m working on a doctorate degree. A graduate of Western Technical himself Brown is now dedicated to turning current students into success stories, serving as the Dean of the School of Business for more than ten years. In the time that I’ve been here every one of our programs has been done somewhat dramatically. He says the curriculum constantly evolves because the college works closely with a community advisory board. It’s really fun to be able to connect with the community and understand what is need in the workforce. Western Tech. uses that local input, rather than state and national trends, to guide class and program offerings. making students much more employable after graduation. There’s a programming class that we have in our web and software developer program, that some would say, ‘You shouldn’t be teaching that anymore it’s an old program,’ but we have three large employers in our district that still utilize that software and that program. Western Technical’s enrollment has jumped up six percent in just one year, and officials are constructing more buildings to keep up with that demand. We are going to finish the integrated technology center by December, the Colmen facility which is a very large classroom and support facility will be done by august in the upcoming year. In addition meeting enrollment and job needs, Western Technical officials say they have ties with every college in the area insuring students who want to go on to a four-year degree can easily transfer credits. I was one of those people who had an associate degree who wanted to go on and finish a bachelors and I know how tricky that can be
if you don’t have those relationships. Western ranked 41-st in the study. Officials say they are also the only technical college in the state to have an increase in enrollment in the last year.
