VT colleges ask for more money from state

SCHOOLS ACROSS THE STATE THAT
SAYS IT IS IN A CRUNCH SO THEY

ARE ASKING FOR HELP.>>I WAS ENCOURAGED AND EXPECTED
TO GO TO COLLEGE. RENEE: ADRIANA ELDRED IS A
JUNIOR AT NORTHERN VERMONT
UNIVERSITY. SHE JOINED STAFF AND TEACHERS
FROM VERMONT STATE COLLEGES,
CALLING FOR MORE STATE FUNDING.>>IT BECAME EXTREMELY EVIDENT
THAT EARNING GOOD GRADES AND
BEING A PROACTIVE STUDENT WOULD
NOT BE THE DETERMINING FACTOR
FOR WHERE I WOULD GO. IT WOULD BE COST. RENEE: THE COLLEGES SAY MANY
STUDENTS ARE LOOKING TO OTHER,
MORE AFFORDABLE STATES FOR THEIR
POST HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION. TO ATTRACT MORE STUDENTS TO
STAY, THEY’RE ASKING THE
LEGISLATURE FOR $5 MILLION PER
YEAR, FOR 5 YEARS. WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT THE MONEY? WE MAY AND OUR PARAMEDIC
PROGRAM. IT IS A TWO YEAR ASSOCIATES
DEGREE. ENROLLMENT HAS BEEN SLACKING AND
I THINK IT IS PRIMARILY BECAUSE
TUITIONS ARE FAR LESS EXPENSIVE
IN OTHER STATES. RENEE: VERMONT TECH, CASTLETON
UNIVERSITY, NORTHERN VERMONT
UNIVERSITY AND THE COMMUNITY
COLLEGE OF VERMONT ALL GET 17%
OF THEIR BUDGET FROM THE STATE
BUT THEY SAY THEY REALLY NEED 30%. AND IN 7 OUT OF THE LAST 10
YEARS THE SYSTEM’S FUNDING HAS
BEEN FLAT, OR REDUCED.>>THAT HAS IT REALLY PUT A REAL
CRAMP IN OUR ABILITY TO MAKE
POST SECONDARY EDUCATION,
EDUCATION BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL
AFFORDABLE FOR VERMONT’S TUNES. RENEE: AND ELDRED IS ONE OF
THOSE STUDENTS.>>IT IS FRUSTRATING AND I FEEL
UNFAIR TO ASK ME TO GO INTO AN
EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF DEBT IN
ORDER TO COME OUT ON THE OTHER
SIDE NOT ONLY HAVING NOTHING BUT
LESS THAN NOTHING. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING. RENEE: THE SCHOOL SAYS THE NEED
FOR MORE FUNDING IS URGENT. WHAT IS UNCLEAR AS WE HEAD INTO
THE NEW LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS
WHETHER OR NOT THE STATE CAN
AFFORD TO PAY THIS MONEY. WE WILL FIND OUT WHEN THEY
