GALIZED, IT’S SIMPLY NOT ALLOWED. THIS NEW LAW DOES NOT CHANGE U.V.M.’S POLICIES PROHIBITING CANNABIS ON CAMPUS. THIS IS JUST PART OF THE STATEMENT SENT TO STUDENTS ON MONDAY, JUST HOURS AFTER GOVERNOR PHIL SCOTT SIGNED A BILL LEGALIZING MARIJUANA AS OF JULY 1. THE SAME IS TRUE AT VERMONT’S STATE COLLEGES.>>WE ABSOLUTELY CANNOT JEOPARDIZE FEDERAL FUNDING BY VIOLATING FEDERAL LAW. IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE. REPORTER: THE COLLEGES ALSO RELY ON FEDERAL FUNDING AS WELL AS STUDENTS WITH FEDERAL LOANS. EVEN IF THEY’RE 21 WHEN POT BECOMES LEGAL THEY TOO COULD FACE TROUBLE. MIDDLEBURY IS AT RISK OF LOSING FEDERAL DOLLARS, INCLUDING TITLE 4 FINANCIAL AID FUNDS FOR STUDENTS IF WE ALLOW CANNABIS ON CAMPUS. SOME STUDENTS APPRECIATE THE MESSAGE.>>THE SCHOOL HAS TO HAVE A POLICY SEPARATE FROM THE STATE I GUESS ON CERTAIN ISSUES, SO I APPRECIATE THE INTENT TO KEEP OUR CAMPUS SAFE.>>I THINK IT’S A LEGAL REGULATION. IT BOIL DOWNS TO THE FACT THAT WE DO NOT KNOW HOW THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT WILL REACT. REPORTER: BUT OTHERS SAY THEY WILL CONTINUE TO USE MARIJUANA DESPITE THE SCHOOL’S STANCE.>>IT’S A COLLEGE, OF COURSE, KID DO IT ANY WAY DESPITE THE LEGALITY OR ILLEGALITY.>>WE NOW KNOW THAT MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE SMOKING MARIJUANA, LIKE THEY DO IN OTHER COLLEGES AND ADULTS DO IN THEIR PRIVACY OF THEIR HOME. WE’VE SEEN THE STATISTICS ON HOW MUCH MARIJUANA IS CONSUMED IN VERMONT. SO IT’S HARD TO SAY WHETHER THE NORMALIZATION OF MARIJUANA SMOKING IS GOING TO AFFECT STUDENTS.
