The "success" of multi-ethnic fusion was an illusory. It was merely the inertia of what the founding national stock–British and Roman, respectively–had put into motion. Like planes that might yet glide a great distance after their fuel runs out before finally crashing. Reply gotarmadillo says: October 20, 2019 at 12:36 pm 1) "blut und boden" DID happen in France-Arturo Comte d'Gobineau wrote "on the Inequality of the Races" arguing for Aryan French Aristocrat class superiority. The idea inevitably came from Darwin' Theory.2) not enough about Mercantile Imperialism of early 20th Century-a great nation was industrial which required markets, raw materials and food for the mother country which could no longer feed itself. Britain was the biggest why America rebelled. But, an empire was essential for national security against other empires, a contradiction of concepts, since nationalism is freedom from foreign rule or empire. This was responsible for a lot of angst during the world war period. 3)America is (was) a nation state but has its own industrial plant, sufficient food, raw, materials under central political control-an empire. 4) The world was ruled by empires prior to the world wars which shattered them into nation states, of sorts, and it appears America is headed in the same direction in our peculiar way. Reply gotarmadillo says: October 20, 2019 at 12:55 pm Yes, but the Nationalist Movement that America defeated in WW2 was a lot more like us than our Communist,Bolshevik ally, which we have come to imitate. Not to say that the European Nationalists were anything for America to emulate, either. However, I'm not sure that we shouldn't have left Europe alone to its devices in its circumstances and us to ours. That would include every foreign war since 1812 and especially the Middle East, today. Wars warp governments. Reply lili shyta says: October 20, 2019 at 2:39 pm The mass immigration population doesn’t know the specifics of constitution. They want to make the America to feel like the country where they came from. They don’t want to know why America is what it is and what are the laws that made America special. Schools have to offer the study of constitution on all grade levels, because that one unites Americans. Reply Christopher Graves says: October 21, 2019 at 3:52 am Well, to say that Rome did not use coercion to conquer people to bring them into their empire is worse than Stalinist revisionism. That claim is idiotically false. Also, in Rome most of the people stayed put and maintained their distinct cultures while they traded with other parts of the empire and paid their taxes to Rome for the Roman infrastructure and protection. America is not multi-cultural, or not until recently. We are Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Other Northern Europeans came in later, mostly the Germans, and altered our culture somewhat. Some German immigrants were radicals and have sown those seeds in parts of the Midwest. When others came in in large numbers, the Congress wisely passed the 1924 Immigration Act that succeeded in protecting the ethnic and racial character of the nation. That all changed in 1965 and we have had massive change in the racial composition of the country. Both waves of mass immigration that came from outside of northern Europe, in the late 19th Century & since the '65 law change, have destabilized the country. Hanson bounces around in a conservative rant from topic to topic with no break, yet introduces important ideas concerning concepts of citizenship. He accurately identifies serious problems, but offers no analysis of their causes amd no proposals of how to overcome them. He does offer some good criticisms of so-called "liberal" politics, but then makes (or implies) statements which just don't hold up, such as non-citizens voting in large numbers in Federal elections. The source of the ills that he identifies is not immigration but rampant capitalism unleashed by the neoliberal revolution of the 1980's. He does not dare to offer solutions, but the answer to the last question does offer some interesting thoughts about what constitutes acceptable political conflict. Documents such as the constitution sure are nice, but they can be changed and they have been changed, they are not holy documents. Who cares about the French constitution, French republic or French language if the French people themselves are either gone or altered to a degree that they have become unrecognizable. Liberia had a copy of the US constitution as its constitution and had English as its official language. It was arguably a black version of the United States. It's very nice for the Africans living there that they had these things, but I could care less, because ultimately they are not my people. Reply William Sickner says: October 22, 2019 at 1:33 pm Immigration undermines, degrades, dilutes, and devalues the protections and privileges enjoyed by citizens. The employment of illegal migrantsby huge dairy farm owners has led to irrevocably harm to tens of thousands ofsmall family sized dairy farmers. Many have suffered great financial hardshipand been forced to sell their cows and farms. The smaller farmers have sufferedmilk prices well below the cost of production as the huge farm owners floodedthe market with milk produced using low wage illegal migrants. These migrantshave allowed MEGA dairy owners to lower their labor cost giving the largeproducers an unfair competitive advantage. This in turn has allowed them toignore market signals to slow or stop production. In fact this readily availablecheap labor supply has encourage the large producers to expand thus worseningthe supply/demand issue and overproduction of milk. Bankers have benefited fromthis illicit labor and immoral hiring practice by making loans to expandingMEGA dairies. Processors and retailers also have used the low milk prices topad their profits while farmers suffer. This explains why these industry groupsand their mouth pieces have and continue to push the narrative that"farmers" need migrants to do jobs that Americans will not do. Whatthey refuse to acknowledge is thatAmericans use to gladly do this work when a lawful and fair market existed andwould gladly do so again if lawfulness was restored so the market functioned correctlyand they could receive a fair price for their milk production and market wagesfor their labor. The blame lies with the businessowners and investors that hire Illegal migrants and encourage them to come here. The harshest penalties should be directed at those who engage in the treasonousacts of hiring migrants and/or facilitating their arrival and staying here. People who falsely claim that"few Americans will do these jobs" always leave out the second partof that premise. And that is "at the low wages I feel I am entitled to getlaborers for." Mike Rowe’s show “Dirty Jobs” debunks that entirenarrative. And just because market ratesfor wages maybe higher than a MEGA dairy owner wishes or can afford in a narrowmargin business doesn’t make them unfair or anything else. It just means thebusiness owner needs to refine his business plan or possibility exit thebusiness if he cannot make the numbers work. It is not an excuse to devalueother people in a country. There is absolutely nothing racistabout demanding that our immigration laws be followed nor pointing out thedamage that is being done to America's small dairy farmers and American workersby an open border and an unlimited flood of migrants. The MEGA dairies willmilk as many cows as they can find labor to do so and that Labor pool should belimited to U.S. citizens. By importingor enticing cheaper foreign labor here they are lowering their cost thus givingthemselves an unfair competitive advantage and the ability to undercut smallerfamily sized dairy farms, flooding our milk market and devaluing the return tofamily labor and capital, and thus suppressing wages both for paid employees and"unpaid" family members and farm owners. Without a cheap foreignlabor force the MEGA dairies would not exist as they presently do. The solepurpose of a country is to ensure protections and privileges for one group ofpeople "citizens" and exclude another group of people"non-citizens" from those same protections and privileges. Immigration undermines, degrades, dilutes, and devalues theprotections and privileges enjoyed by citizens. So, when a MEGA dairy ownerclaims he thinks he has a right to migrant labor what he is really saying isthat he thinks he has the right to devalue the privileges and protectionsenjoyed by every other U.S. citizen in order to greedily enrich himself. Thereis nothing racist about it. Reply SlackVariable says: October 22, 2019 at 6:18 pm Here's what enrages me, more than what the left has done. Hillsdale has taken the notions that used to underpin our nation and were once a birthright that belonged to my fathers and should belong to my sons, and turned those notions in to a theme park. The left never met any meaningful resistance. The right was always happy to have its cut. Consider the situation from the immigrant's position. They see a population being openly disenfranchised, sidelined and marginalized. They see newcomers awarded concessions and privileges, directly proportional to the contempt they show for the those their populations have been imposed on. Why would they integrate? For what? Citizenship is becoming little more than a coupon. Reply Brian Finn says: October 22, 2019 at 8:47 pm How many of those votes that Hillary "won" the popular vote were actually US citizens? Reply Michael Robeson says: October 28, 2019 at 10:23 pm Did you notice that Hanson never once used the word ‘culture’ when criticizing the declining values in American society? If Hanson were honest, he would point out that America’s mercantilist mentality and consumerist priorities have been the greatest destroyers of an American democratic culture. For the past forty years, American’s have described themselves as consumers before being citizens. Also, Hanson’s understanding of German nationalism is way off base. In Louis Dumont’s great study ‘German Ideology’ he writes about the social ideologies that lead to different forms of nationalism. The French, influenced by the Enlightenment, have a Universalist vision of their nation, that is, they are ‘man by nature and a Frenchman by accident’. But Germans, influenced by the Reformation, have a cultural vision – They are ‘a German in the first place and a man through his being a German.’ Can even a flag waving American nationalist who votes once every two years be a genuine citizen? Much less ‘be a man through his being’ an American? Small chance. The German nation is comprised of various and differing cultures, just as America once was. What Hanson rightly described as tribalism in American (gays, blacks, Yankee fans, etc.) came about because Americans do not have, as Germans and other European countries do – a culture that provides individuals with a unique identity that can be at home in a unique culture. Unfortunately, Germans themselves have been losing that sense of self identity, mainly because the very word Kultur brings up a time German history that Germans are required to revile. In fact, most of us recognize the concept. In the US, it's an intuitive part of our language. An African-American is exactly that, while I'm simply an American. Mr. Hansen inadvertently acknowledges this by using "Mexican-American," rather than "Americans of Mexican origin." We all know what "American" means, and that's okay. Tribalism is normal, natural, and has always been present. If a European claimed to be Chinese, they would get strange looks. He might have citizenship, he might speak the language, and he might even have fully assimilated into the culture of China, but he will never be Chinese. If a Chinese man claimed to be Kenyan, the same would apply. It's an absurd premise. Some nations happen to treat outsiders more kindly than others, but clearly our kindness has been exploited. The only people who are expected to sacrifice their identity are white westerners, whose collective identities have been reduced to one of ideas, rather than anything tangible. China is a nation and a people, and no matter what disagreements that they have, their goals are the survival and prosperity of China- even if that looks a little different to westerners. You can't expect a transplanted Pakistani to have genuine shared identity with the UK, a nation where his sole interest is his own personal prosperity. Reply John says: November 10, 2019 at 1:49 am Good lord. Rome united peoples of different races and creeds without using coercion? What a ridiculous statement. You might want to interview some North Africans from the city of Carthage. Oh, that's right, the city was literally wiped off the face of the earth (archeologists are hard pressed to find any remains), and all the men, women and children slaughtered or sold into slavery, the usual fate of peoples who didn't submit. Julius Caesar "united" Gall and Rome by committing genocide against the native inhabitants. What kind of historian is this guy? The more credible historian Tacitus was frank and truthful enough to admit that the Romans "plunder, they slaughter, and they steal: this they falsely name Empire, and where they make a wasteland, they call it peace" (atque, ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant). Reply John says: November 10, 2019 at 6:00 am Well, the "citizens" of Rome massacred by the thousands under Sulla and the Second Triumvirate would love to have know they had property rights, as the state confiscated their property and murdered them without trial. The citizens of the empire who had abstract property rights would have loved to have known they could "make laws" under an absolute autocracy. Even under the Republic, they were largely giving the stamp of approval to laws presented to them by the patrician Senate. Greek democracies were the only case where "citizens" could actually make laws. And most Greek city-states weren't democracies anyway. This guy is one of those extreme Eurocentric historians who singles out one feature, like legal recognition of private property for citizens in Roman law, and thinks that proves that Europe, despite all the slavery and despotism, was somehow superior to Asia. Anyway, private property existed much the same under Asian empires ås well as a private market sector, even if technically property was ultimately owned by the Emperor. The only difference I can think of is that these Asian empires did not have mass chattel, plantation slavery like Rome, just domestic slavery. Indeed under Chinese "despotism" there was a free peasantry. Sparta was a "republic" with "citizens," but the state decided which babies to expose as unfit to become future warriors (talk about a "death panel"!) And it had enslaved the entire indigenous population of the area, the Helots, and by law could freely murder any of them, at any time. In Athens so long as democracy persisted (under the 30 tyrants there was a mass judicial execution perpetrated by associates of Socrates and Plato), there was freedom of political participation and equality under the law and the right to jury trials but there was no freedom of religion. Remember Socrates? Executed for undermining the state religion. This guy shows how right the academic world was to push towards a more broad-minded world historical perspective on history, not this kind of narrow apology for "the West," which can't be sustained by any historian who cares about evidence. You know the officer get paid .. the other they don’t get paid.. and the officer they have time for working in the position for 30 years.. so whoever walking out first and can not get the job .. they end up coming back here again and again .
