USI International Student: Giselle Fernandez – Venezuela

I’m Giselle Fernandez. I’m from Venezuela. I grew up there. My dad is a doctor, and my mom is a
physical therapist, and I’ve been there my entire life until I
was 18 and then I decided to come here to the States
to go to college. As I started searching for universities, we contacted a guide that
specialized in seeing helping Venezuelan students to come
here to the U.S. and study. He gave me a big list of like
different schools, big universities, small universities, and then with the prices of course, tuition, and he really liked USI because he
thought it was very affordable and he really liked the and campus he knew
people already that was going to… that were going to USI, so he knew that it was good. When I first arrived on campus, I was
really scared because it was the first time that I was
gonna be completely by myself, but the International Programs was very welcoming, and they made me feel
like I was at home and that I wasn’t alone and I really like that. It just
made me feel so much better and I was very calm after that. So I knew that I made the right decision. I could have chosen any university here
in the States, but I decided to go to USI because I didn’t want to go into a very
big university. I just wanted somewhere where I could have a
better relationship with my teachers and when I did some research I really
like the biology program. I couldn’t be happier with my
decision. The biology program is very good as well as the
geology program. The teachers are very helpful. They
actually know your name and they work with you if you need something. So I think it was one of the best
decisions I’ve ever made. I’m studying to be a geologist and
specialize in earth and space science and USI is helping me with that because
there’s a lot of formations so we can actually seen and it’s easier to understand them and
it’s better to study and actually retain information for
the future. I’ve been here for three years now and I’m very involved. I’m actually the president of the international club, I’m in a sorority, I’m in the biology club. So there’s many ways you can get
involved. It’s not just going to class and doing homework and taking tests. You
will find that there’s a lot of diversity here. I’ve met people from many different
countries and I still keep in touch with them so if I ever travel I know I have
somewhere to stay in almost every country in the world. My experience at USI has been great. It’s helped me in so many ways that I can’t
even describe them. I’ve become a better person and more mature because I had to take care of myself and I like
that I’ve been able to help others and not just study by also be involved
and meet people from all over the world and being able to keep in
contact with them and having friends and it’s just a very good experience and I
can’t wait to see what’s left.
