University of New Haven Graduate Student Experience

The University of New Haven is truly a student-first
university. I’m so proud of our faculty who always go
the extra mile for our students, always looking for ways to help them, inspire them, hook
them up with opportunities. It’s an institution that’s small enough
to make an incredible difference in the lives of those that come here, and it’s an institution
that is big enough to make a difference in the world. As a master’s student, all of our attention
will be on you. If you go to a bigger university with a lot
of Ph.D. students and post-docs, they might be the ones that you will be working with
in the laboratory. But here at the University of New Haven, it
is really about our relationship with our master’s students. The faculty are very engaged with students. Many of them are on a first-name basis with
students, that might be foreign to some students, but that mentorship on a daily bases shows
the level of intimacy that they have in the work that they do. Just a couple months ago, I was given support
by one of my professors because I was second-guessing my life course, what I wanted to do after
I graduated. He sat me down for three hours. We talked about the program, what I liked,
my extracirculars outside of school. He said I can get you internships, I can get
you interviews, whatever you need, I can help you. Because he has connections. I personally have had so many good experiences
with my professors. I was a very shy person when I joined, but,
because of their encouragement, they helped me get one of my internships at Yale Hospital,
which helped me grain my current employment. There were times that I was in the library
consecutively for 32 hours, and there were times when the librarian, walked up to me
and say “now you have to go get something to eat.” So I think that support, is extraordinary
because even the staff members are so concerned about you, and they actually take care of
you – as one of your own. So that bonding that comes from a university,
I think it’s outstanding. The University of New Haven is a place that
welcomes diversity. It’s an unpretentious place. It’s a place where students really feel
like they are themselves. It’s so amazing to me how diverse it is. There’s been so many group works, organizations,
and clubs where I been working with students from so many different countries. I just love the feeling of taking away that
international, diverse network. Every student that comes to the University
of New Haven is assigned an academic adviser, who is a member of our full-time faculty,
who has a close background to what it is that the student is interested in pursuing. So no one gets lost around here. In fact, one of the things that we try to
do is make sure we give specific opportunities for students to learn about the areas that
they are interested in. You are not just another student at the University
of New Haven. We provide you with the skills necessary to
find the job and career of your choosing. We want them to go work in the field, to use
their graduate degree, to go and work in amazing jobs with the tools that we provided them. The successful student is one that creates,
that innovates, and we work very closely as faculty members, trying to create and innovate
with these students so that they can have something on their record, so that they can
show what they are capable of by time they graduate. The University of New Haven gave me a great
education, a network of friends, and a practical experience. When our students graduate, they’re welcomed
by an alumni base of over 50,000, from almost 50 different countries and almost 50 states,
that help them further their careers, connect them in business and industry, and help connect
them in the communities in which they are going to thrive and succeed.
