University of Michigan Student Vlog : Behind the Scenes with the Michigan Marching Band

Hey my name is Robbie Amori, I’m a
junior here at U-M studying chemical engineering with a minor in music and
I’m a clarinet player in the marching band. So this video I’ll kind of be going
over what it’s like to be an engineer at U-M and also in the marching band. [Drums play in the background] So
at every rehearsal the band rehearses our pregame sequence. Umm depending of the day of the week we’ll do either short sequences of pregame or will do long chunks of
pregame, or we’ll do a full run of pregame. Today’s Wednesday which means? Full Run! We’ve got a full run of pregame today. Let’s do it. [Metronome plays] [Band begins playing] [Drummers play] So the marching band is
actually a class that’s offered through the university. It’s called Ensemble 348. Umm It’s takes place every day during the week umm for an hour and a half. So today’s Friday which means we have rehearsal in the Big House. Umm We actually before
rehearsal on Fridays we have our challenges so there’s about 400 people
in the band but only 250 to 275 people are actually on the field for any
performance. Umm so we have a challenge it’s like an audition every week umm to see who’s
gonna be actually performing in the next show. So you rehearse pretty often, umm and
then also on game days we rehearse for most of the day and also have the game
so there’s it’s a big commitment on game days, umm and it’s also a fairly big
commitment during the week. Alright so today’s game day and since it’s a night
game, our rehearsal’s in the afternoon instead of the morning. Umm so right now I’m
in my house there’s eight of us that live here. We’re all in the band and uhh
we decided to make pancakes this morning get ready for the game. [Clarinets tuning in the background]
So we just got to the pregame rehearsal usually there’s a lot of people here to watch cuz it’s so
open to the public. Umm it’s pretty rainy today so there’s like nobody here we’re just kind of sad. But yeah Go Blue! So it’s still pretty cold
and rainy but we actually have a lot of people that showed up you can see over
there but there’s a lot of people in the stands so yay! [Band rehearses fanfare] After our game day rehearsal umm the whole
section has a tailgate together. So the parents and families of all the members
provide a bunch of food for us and we all eat together. So right now we’re all eating a bunch of food. Umm today’s
barbecue it’s delicious. All right we’re in the tunnel now getting ready to go out for pregame. It’s still super rainy but that’s okay we’re gonna have a great time. Let’s Go Blue! Go Blue! Since band is such a big time commitment
during the week a lot of people ask if band members have time to join other
groups and be parts of different things on campus. And the answer is of course.
Umm most band members are actually parts of things outside of band too so for
example I am a co-president of the club swim team SWIM ON THREE! 1-2-3 SWIM! I’m also a member of the
triathlon club. [water splashes] So you may be thinking that it might
sound kind of atypical to have an engineer in the marching band, but the
band actually consists of members from all the different colleges at the
University. Umm and I think somewhere around like half the band is in engineering. [classroom chatter]
So right now I’m in class for mass and heat transfer it’s one of the upper-level
chemical engineering courses we’re in G.G. Brown one of the cooler
buildings on North. So this is probably one of the smaller lecture halls that
I’m ever in. Umm most of our classes are uhh usually around like 150 people
this one’s like maybe like under 120, somewhere around there. So with that I want to end
this vlog I had a lot of fun filming this. I hope you found it informative and also entertaining. Umm yeah the show was a lot of fun to do. Umm collaborating with NASA and the College of Engineering was a blast. If you were here
and saw the show I hope you enjoyed it. If you weren’t here hopefully you can
see it on YouTube later and experience it still there. So Go Blue!
