University of Leeds – Finding books in the Library

University of Leeds – Finding books in the Library

Welcome to the short video from [email protected] which gives you information about how to find books in the library. In this example you can see some results from Library Search about ‘study skills’. Look above the title of each item to see what type of information you have found. We can see that there are multiple
editions available for ‘The Study Skills Handbook’. You can find more information
by clicking the title. Once you decide which you’d like to read (this would
normally be the most recent version), click on the title. There are several
libraries on campus, so don’t forget to note which library and which floor the
book is on. Every book in the library has a shelfmark, which you can see here.
Leeds shelfmarks always start with a subject. This is usually followed by a
letter and number. Shelfmarks generally end with a three-letter code, usually the
first three letters of the author’s surname. You will need all this
information to find your book. There are two shelfmarks in this example. You will
find one book in the Language Zone, at ENG SK 001, and one on floor 1 of the
Laidlaw Library, at Skills A-1 COT. You can click ‘Locate’ to see a
floor plan which will help you find the book on the shelves. Finally, you can find
out whether the book is available to borrow. ‘Available’ means that the book can
be borrowed. If the book you want is on loan, you can
request it by first signing in. You’ll then see a green ‘Request’ button. Click
this to recall the book. This will give the person who has the item, seven days to
return it to the library. Some books are available as eBooks. This means that you
can click to read them online. If you click the ‘View this book online…’ link,
this will connect you to the eBook. You may need to log in if you haven’t
already. Once connected, you will be able to read the book online. Some eBooks can
be downloaded for a short time. You may also be able to print or save sections
of the book. Some eBooks also allow you to make notes online and search
through them. Thank you for watching. If you would like more information about
how the Library can help you, please go to the Library website.
