THE LAST CHECK THE TRADE WINDS ARE BLOWING THE SMOKE PLUME TOWARD THE SOUTHEAST. HAPPENING TODAY, AS MANY AS 80,000 UC WORKERS ARE HOURS AWAY FROM WALKING OFF THE JOB. DINA KUPFER JOINS US WITH WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PATIENT CARE. GOOD MORNING, DINA. GOOD MORNING. AS YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE A FEW DOZEN PROTESTERS AND PICKETERS HERE THIS MORNING. THEY ARE ASKING FOR BETTER WAGES AND EQUAL PAY FOR RACE AND GENDER. THEY WANT SAFE STAFFING. AS MANY AS 50,000 WILL WALK OFF THE JOB TODAY FOR A STRIKE. THIS IS ACROSS THE STATE, NOT JUST IN SACRAMENTO. WE SPOKE TO A PATIENT WHO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SICKLE-CELL ANEMIA AS A CHILD. SHE SAID PAIN MANAGEMENT IS CRUCIAL TO HER SURVIVAL. SHE SAID HER PAIN MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS WERE PUSHED OUT AS A RESULT OF THE STRIKE. TAKE A LISTEN. I NEED THESE PEOPLE. IF THESE NURSES ARE NOT HERE I WON’T GET THE HELP. IT TAKES PEOPLE LIKE ME AWAY FROM MY KIDS. THE CHIEF NURSING OFFICER SAID THAT STAFF HAS SPENT 10 DAYS MAKING SURE THAT THEY WOULD BE PREPARED FOR THIS DAY.
