UWC makes education a force to unite people,
nations and cultures around the globe for peace and a sustainable future. Once you come to a UWC
college there are all of these infinite possibilities There’s so much to do here,
and it’s just incredible The things you experience are just
amazing and I am sure I will remember it for the rest of my life. UWC was founded in 1962 and now has 14 schools
as well as volunteer-run representation in more than 150 countries. The idea behind it was to bring young people
from around the world and to challenge them academically but also challenge them physically. The simple idea of bringing young
people together from different parts of the world and if you did it at 16 to 19 or ever younger, you are going to have a big impact. If the challenge is set
high, we will surprise ourselves time and time and time again. UWC deliberately selects students of diverse
ethnicities, religions and socio-economic backgrounds with more than 60 per cent of
those in the IB Diploma years receiving some form of financial support. When they come to us, we
have a name and a nationality and so we put them into dorms. They are experiencing life
for themselves, finding out about themselves but I am walking along side them the whole
way. I am from Haiti and we
don’t have English as the main language. Sarah, my house parent, is really great. When I have any problems, I can go to her and find a solution with her. People come with not just
economic, but cultural, political social backgrounds. And we do try to augment them in our culture
here. So that other students and teachers are aware of those things. Students are expected to bring their culture
to the classroom and create their own activities and ambitions as part of UWC’s belief in experiential learning This results in some of the best IB results in the world. School life is excellent
in Hong Kong. Because I think this UWC actually combines and balances the academics and extracurriculars very well. We have around 80 extracurricular activities and our art studio is very big.
We have a lot of opportunities to perform and produce our own things and we are given
a lot of responsibility in leading. One of the things that sets our school apart
from other schools is that we focus a lot not only on developing our academic studies,
but also individually as a person and helping our community. A lot of our activies are
focused on service to the community and then we have a Developing Action programme, which
is not just sports but its also about well being, fitness and about developing our outdoor activities. UWC inspires a lifelong commitment among more
than 50,000 alumni making them feel part of a global fellowship dedicated to delivering
our mission Everywhere you
see, there are people around you, daring to make a difference in this world. Daring to
do beyond what they thought was possible. Being able to access the
UWC experience will certainly change the life of the individual. There is absolutely no
doubt about that. UWC is a fabulous place to inspire passions, to learn from the great
faculty to learn from your peers and to think how you are going to change the world. Obviously the IB is demanding,
but its what happens outside the classroom that really makes this place as magic as it is.
The opportunity to be with so many people from different places and to make friends
from everywhere is incredible. These experiences, thats what made my time
in here and thats what will continue to allow me to pass the UWC ethos on where ever I go
next.
