UCLan Graduation 2017

The highlight is probably because all of
my lecturers are specialists in their fields – getting to work with them and
absorb all their knowledge and also the practical nature of my degree as well
because you get to do a laboratory placement – that’s been brilliant! I joined the Army at sixteen – I did 26 years in the infantry and left the army in the August and went straight into my foundation degree at UCLan in the September! I’m over the moon – I’m really happy. It’s a monumental
experience to come here and to graduate, especially someone of my age
to come back into a second career. There’s personal and professional development classes there’s a class called
Launchpad which is teaching people to be leaders of the future in
terms of all the soft skills needed around interviews and just being a
good team player in an environment. You wouldn’t get that at a lot of universities – they’d just teach you the skills but UCLan really help in that sense. Most graduates go straight into employment once finishing at University – I’ve got a lot of international connections. I’ve been to a few places –
Cambodia, United States, Australia – I studied in Cyprus in my second year and
saw Iceland, Greece, Italy. I feel like being at UCLan has been
really beneficial for me there’s opportunities that you can find outside
campus but the campus has so many within – you don’t really have to go
out and do kind of studying and you get experience at the same time. The stand out moments
were the Rugby club I’ve been there throughout the three years –
the club has been brilliant, so much fun! You look forward to Wednesdays… you look forward to Wednesday’s when you go out! The one-to-one support makes sure that mature students understand what’s going on. I’ve made some lifetime friends – one of my best friends is actually called Tegan as well! I think
I’ll be good friends with her for the rest of my life. Personal fulfilment this is for me, absolutely. It’s great to have the chance to go
and do these things. All the equipment that we needed to do my dissertation was there. Everything’s really close on campus – I
liked the idea of not having to get a bus to lectures! It’s not a long walk so I can spend an extra ten minutes in bed! If you really want to do it you can! I’ve managed to do it with four young children and working full-time. If I can do it it anybody can do it! Look at me! I’m not young, I’m about 44,
look I’m not young and I’ve done it! So why wait? You can do anything if you really want to. UCLan can give you a fantastic education in a fantastic location – it’s a really fun environment – a very safe campus and I really enjoyed the friends that I’ve made as well. A lot of people are going to university nowadays and loads of people have degrees – something you’ll get out of this university is they will teach you professional and personal development – they’ll teach you
how to do really well in a job but how to interact with other people,
how to secure the job in the first place. Things like that are really rare
and you don’t see it with a lot of red brick uni’s and this is why UCLan is growing really fast and getting a really good reputation from employers.
