(music) Artie Surratt (Student Success Team): Going
to class is very important for your success. A lot of times students will not go and you
will see that attendance will swell on exam days. If you go to class, you will get the
material you need from your instructor as well as important things that will be on exams. You are paying for your education, so take advantage of it. (music) Denise Rode (Director, First- and Second-Year
Experience): Having access to the course materials is key to your success as an NIU student.
It is ideal if you can buy your textbooks because you can mark them up as you want,
but if you can’t, you can often times find them at the NIU Library. (music) Artie Surratt: College is more than just going
to class. Join a couple clubs and organizations that will help you enhance your time here.
Studies do show that if you connect the campus, you will have a better time in college as
well as do better academically. Here in the Office of First- and Second-Year Experience, we have
a program called Huskies Get Connected. What you can do is, you can stop by, talk to us,
and based on your own goals we can connect you to organizations that way you can help
enhance your experience. (music) Denise Rode: If you have a question about
what is going on in class or you are struggling with any course material, having an existing
relationship with your faculty makes it easier to greet with them during office hours or
before or after class. Plus, you have a pool of faculty members that can provide references
for you. (music) It is important to be your own advocate in
college and to ask a question whenever you have it. There are people and places here
at NIU that can help you with almost any concern that you have. If you are not exactly sure
where to turn, you can always come here to First- and Second-Year Experience and we will
do our best to connect you with the most appropriate people to help you out. (music)
