Top 10 Useless College Degrees and Classes
Top 10 Useless College Degrees and Classes 10. David Beckham studies — Staffordshire
University, UK It might sound like a joke, but the squeaky-voiced
soccer star actually has a degree course dedicated to him. The course, which is technically classed
as “Football Culture”, has been defended by its founder, who argues that degree courses
must keep with the times. Celeb-style degrees can also be found in the US, with Madonna
studies injected into the Gender course at Harvard (no less) and Oprah Winfrey studies
at Illinois. 9. Parapsychology — various colleges This degree is perfect for starting a career
with Ghostbusters. Oh wait, Ghostbusters are fictional — that’s four years wasted. Nevertheless,
this course dedicated to the study of the paranormal (Slimer and haunted houses included)
is popping up in universities and colleges worldwide. Coventry, Edinburgh, Northampton
and Liverpool in the UK, plus Belford and Flamel in the US all offer the course, which
makes you wonder if people are watching too many Most Haunted episodes. 8. Doctorate of Philosophy in Ufology — Melbourne
University In August this year, Aussie Martin Plowman
became the first student to become a real Dr Who after passing his studies of unidentified
flying objects. After his major in culture and communications, he decided he wanted to
do something a bit different, so he chose little green men. However, despite his new
status, he remains open-minded about things: “When I meet someone who says they’ve seen
something strange, that’s fair enough, because maybe they have. I don’t know what it is,
though,” 7. The Phallus — Occidental College It’s difficult to get to grips with the exact
nature of this course — if you’ll pardon the pun. It’s cited as studies “between the
phallus and the penis, the meaning of the phallus, phallologocentrism, the lesbian phallus,
the Jewish phallus, the Latino phallus, and the relation of the phallus and fetishism”
but is actually a survey offered by this distinguished college’s department of critical theory and
social justice. 6. Surfing Studies — Plymouth / Melbourne Gone are the days of dumb surfer dudes riding
the waves without a care. Now, surfing means business. With Plymouth Uni in the UK offering
a BSc (Hons) in Surf Science and Technology and Southern Cross University in Australia
offering Surf and Sport Management, is seems the seaside slackers want to be taken seriously.
What next? Wrestling degrees? 5. Philosophy — various colleges Philosophy, like sociology and psychology,
is one of those degrees that people do when they’re not quite sure what vocation they
want to follow . It’s a fun-time four years, open to stoners, egocentrics and those that
love the sound of their own voice, who will finish the course even more confused at what
they want to do in life and probably end up working at a convenience store. 4. Queer Musicology — UCLA Due to seemingly popular demand, the UCLA
have actually combined queer theory — the study of gender, feminism and gayness — with
the science of music, to produce a very open-minded course within their Herb Alpert School of
Music. The LA Times reported that the course will introduce debates like: “the idea that
if you’re gay, then music by gay composers such as Benjamin Britten will sound different
to you than it would if you were straight.” 3. Star Trek — Georgetown University in Washington It’s a degree, Jim, but not as we know it.
The Georgetown faculty of Philosophy argues that “Star Trek is very philosophical. What
better way, then, to learn philosophy, than to watch Star Trek, read philosophy, and hash
it all out in class?” The Trekkies have also landed at Indiana University, who curiously
combine their Star Trek Studies with religion. If only there were more vacancies for professional
dorks… 2. Golf Management — University of Birmingham
/ Florida Gulf Coast University Here’s another useless sport degree spreading
through Universities across the world, but this one lands the number two position because
it’s not even fun. There’s nothing much duller than playing golf apart from studying golf,
so why these two Universities have offered courses covering the psychology of golf; equipment
technology; financial performance and coach education, is a mystery. 1. Art History — various colleges What career would you ever get with a degree
in art history? Maybe an art gallery curator, but how many of those does the world actually
need? Most art history courses consist of a selection of well-to-do teenagers and arty-hippy
types deliberating over the same Dali and Magritte paintings for four, even five years
straight. It’s time to move on! Honorable Mentions: The Science of Harry Potter — Frostburg University Maryland’s Frostburg University provides this
honors seminar, which is really a physics class that investigates the supposed magic
of Harry Potter. Seems like an excuse to watch the Harry Potter movies. Learning from YouTube — Pitzer College California’s Pitzer College has added a class
named, Learning from YouTube. TechCrunch reports that “the class consists of students watching
YouTube videos and then discussing them. They also leave comments on the videos themselves.”
Anything that ends with "studies" is a worthless degree.
IRREVERSIBLE VAGINORSEABLENAED
EXPANSION .
Any selective uninspectable translucenceThighlaennde bangedcork quasi Queersi university .
Thighlaennde bangedcork vacuous vaginacuousnas revere any half baked degree immersed in confounded intercontinental infusions .
College is a waste of time in most situations. It's a huge money making machine. They try to convince you that you are worthless if you don't shell out $100k.
Memeology đ€
Useless degrees in terms of economics.
I have a BA (Tree Feelings Appreciation). Yep, I can now tell you how a tree feels when it's hot, cold, wet, dry – or if the tree is just sad because of hormonal imbalances. Uni – the best 6 years of my life.
This is essentially false as when you have a degree, any degree, you have proven you can set a goal and accomplish it. Many employers don't care so long as you have a degree. If you can't get a job after college, it's something you are doing, it's not your degree.
any fine arts degree, you also have to learn how to say "Do you want fries with that"
Any of the "grievance factory" studies such as gender, or racial studies, would apply here. Not only do you have a degree in something with no economic value, you basically sign up to be indoctrinated — i.e., you learn how not to think, which shouldn't be what college is about.
Pyschology has major applications in human resource management, demographics, research, policy etc. I don't believe the narrator has any idea about some of these things.
Quite honestly, Philosophy doesn't deserve to be on this list
Most of them are useless
Bachelor of Science in Vulcanizing major in Tire Recapping.
1865 dislikes by people who have useless college degrees and student loan debt.
Gender studies
Black history
Beyonce
Women's studies = Women spending money (almost certainly not their own) to learn how to be more pissed off so they can then not get a job and be pissed off about that too.
Fair enough, Iâm not too fond of golf myself, however speaking on the behalf of people that are, I would take offence to your statements. Those who play golf clearly take an interest in it, and wouldnât study the course unless they liked golf. So the point you make about golf being a bad sport to play wouldnât apply to those that took the course as they obviously have some sort of interest in it. Horrendous video and one of the worst Iâve seen on YouTube.
And even some regular degrees are useless if you not really know much about the subject. I dropped out of school in the 11th grade. Some years ago I had to draw a wiring schematic for some on to show them how to replace an overly completed triac switching circuit with a simple relay. Now here is the kicker. I am a high school drop and he has an electrical engineer degree.
I strongly dissagree with no 1 my art broker has a degree in art history among other things ive taken a couple classes in it as well its not all bad
If the college course is usually easy and there is no right or wrong answer to college questions, these courses are usually useless.
Philosophy? Thatâs weird, the greatest thinkers in our history used philosophy to mould modern society. Whatâs your degree? Media studies?
Surfing is the funniest degree
math is somewhat useless I barely remember anything from 2001-2004 math classes im still really profecient in math though
Arts and philosophy are essential studies. Transgender study are useless and damaging to society., why wasn't it mentioned?
I studied Gender Studies for five years at University and now i am a successful feminist teacher at a community center, lecturing to homeless men about how they have lost their way in life.
What's the definition of being useful? Career- oriented is not the purpose and value of university. You have no idea how gender studies and philosophy change the world, there are very useful in a higher level.
Philosophy useless? You, Sir, have the encephalisation quotient of a nematode worm…
There's a Star Trek major in my school ???!!! I did not know that !!!
Philosophy useless? Are you kidding? It just founded the western civilization.
And Art History is really important even if I agree: if you're not rich don't study it you'll never profit out of it.
Cmon man, are you really ranking Philosophy in the same list as Star Trek and Lesbian Studies. I normally enjoy your Top Ten list, but philosophy as a useless degree? I suppose that your view of the University is that it ought to be a glorified trade school.
These are all outliers as rarely are these degree problems. Business classes for a major sport in hardly worthless!
Lastly philosophy is about philosophy and does not exist to help get you a job but exists to enlighten people. Itâs been apart of a classical education for thousands of years and was at the center of the Enlightenment.
Do these idiots do ANY research before posting?
Philosophy and art are serious. This charlatan does not know anything worth while.
Libards are so stupid
Well this wasn't what I was expecting.
Who needs school anyway?
I have never seen a more compelling argument for the removal of Government funding of colleges.
People are not going to spend their own money on this crap.
something needs to be said, if you are gifted in any intellectual area, no degree is worthless because you can use simple having a degree to get your foot in the door and give recruiters an excuse to hire someone without experience. If you're gifted you'll be able to prove yourself so well that it doesn't matter, if they know you are gifted, that degree gives them the foothold in management to explain your hire.
Iâm a communications/journalism major
If you are planning on going to Law School, Philosophy is the best major as they have the highest LSAT scores. And your conclusion of being more confused after completing the major is fallacious; sounds like it was very hard for you to critically think of your confused easily. Philosophy majors graduate with higher writing skills, reading comprehension skills and communication skills. This is why they are scoring 170+ on the LSAT. This video is very Utilitarian. Great for encouraging robotic and unchallenged thinking.
Lesbian dance theory
#1 Gender Studies
The art history can be useful in the event a piece of art needs to be authenticated. Knowledge of the history during the time a piece of art is alleged to have been created would be useful and potentially very important due to the price of some art pieces. You also didn't mention gender studies, but this list is unbelievable. What a waste.
No gender studies? Disliked.
I'm majoring in Philosophy at Wisconsin. I can honestly say what I have learned has made me a better analytical thinker, thanks to the logic courses, and made me happier in life. I took the lsat this year and actually did well. Philosophy is not a useless major if you enjoy it and do well, though in all honesty, the worse the institution you attend is, the more difficult your outlook post-graduation may be.
Philosophy and history are the basic foundation of the human knowledge.
What an insulting treatment of philosophy, you guys obviously know nothing about the importance of the subject.
Philosophy i disagree with. While I am a stoner, most of us become successful lawyers or professors.
I don't get it, why will someone think art history is such a '' useless '' major, please respect people who have passion in art history and you can actually find many jobs related to it.
1.Gender studies
Art history developed out of history, and it did so because it can stand on its own two legs. Art historians have an importance for organising our historical understanding of art. Also, the art market is one of the biggest markets in the world, a smart art historian will be able to operate within that market and take himself further than the creator of this channel ever will go in life. And when it comes to philosophy, someone well versed in ethics might work in a hospital, helping doctors make difficult decisions, or people who combine maths and philosophy might end up in banking.
Add banking and finance to that. Been unemployed for 1.5 years now
Think you need to consider that golf management isnât pointless and boring if you actually like golf and it makes you a qualified golf coach at the end of the course
I know a guy with a degree in the recorder
Latina lesbian dance theory studies
I agree on the practicality aspects of most, but both the surfing and golf studies are practical for anyone interested in following these sports professionally. Especially golf, with the outrageous number of golf courses in the U.S. alone.
Art history isn't just for a curator. Assessors, those who maintain and fix old paintings, almost anyone who deals with works of art needs this course of study.
Philosophy. Totally useless but facinating study. Why? Because.
As far as I am oncerned, among the most absurd and irrelevant âMickey Mouseâ degrees are MBAâs, âBusiness Studies, Accountancy and Economics in general…..
They teach kids to be socialists, pos's, brain washing (101) propaganda (101) , why don't they have porn classes, how to sell guns and drugs, how to be a demonfag and take away everybody's job, and so on, professors today can't add two and two, they are acid dropping demshits, there little pea brains are mush, period…..
Philosophy and psychology are to go into jobs like being a doctor or a psychologist so they are needed just like the rest of them itâs to get a job
Of you can make the money back that you blow into a university within a year its a useless degree
Don't you ever insult Philosophy! Ever!! Plato, Socrates, Aristotle and all philosophers will rise from the dead and kill you!!
Black studies anyone?
đđđđđđ We have an entire university teaching about Women here =)))
ITS MEL- BEN NOT MEL-BORN AHHHHHHH
right im a highschool student in the UK and im already thinking about degrees. anyway, is a phd in psychology worth going for or should I choose something else
I can't imagine that people who take these courses actually believe that they can somehow get a job in this "major".
Women's Studies. Become a fully qualified waitress.
Harry Potter degree should be there also
Very disappointed when philosophy is down on earth
I lost all respect when you said playing golf is boring. Most people who say that have never actually played or devoted any time to it.
Okay. Thatâs fantastic! I just saw a York University ad come before this episode. Silly, silly algorithm.
You had me until you mentioned Golf Management… tisk tisk
I've done 4 years of research on the education bubble.
I strongly disapprove sociology and physchology being included on this list…sociology to be very particular is very relevant in understanding human societies, the dynamism and complexities that characterize human behaviours and actions. As such ,it is very important in every society.
Philosophy definitely isnât useless.
People! This channel excluded gender studies because this video was released in 2014. Gender Studies was not as popular before the 3rd wave feminists. So please, calm down.
Ill take a Star Trek class for an elective
with a psychology degree you can be a psychologist ,a teacher or working with statistics ect i don't see how thats useless
Other than philosophy I agree with this list, undermining philosophy because it doesn't provide job opportunities is outright ignorant, there's more to seeking education than just job opportunities.
i feel like the people disliking this video took one of these majors lmao
I have to make the argument that philosophy is actually a very important degree to have. People that want to become lawyer actually study philosophy because it helps prepare them for law school. Also, we as humans need to study the way we think in the world so we can improve ourselves. Without philosophy, we wouldn't have the important ethical framework needed for society.
Is the IHE? Also, i found this video by putting `linguistics` into youtube. Rip linguists.
Your list is bunk. There are really three types of courses. Courses that get you a job, courses that don't, and lesbian dance courses.
Parapsychology is actually and ufologist is not pointless because of all the weird same things that people report and people also reporting the same exact things and missing time and I assure you we are not alone my friend so donât say that itâs pointless. When itâs actually not itâs quite useful and all the word military people going to peoples doors and telling people to keep quite seriously who would lie about that the government has admitted it investigates ufo with project blue book and they told us they do exist. They even have ex CIA agents on there death beds admitted these events are true.
B.p.ED is Also
sports studys
Don't philosophy programs provide critical thinking and analyzing skills? I personally am considering philosophy in preparation for a career in law. Besides a degree is what you make it and how you sell yourself.đ
Some top ten lists are useless.
If you're a feminist and are offended by the comments about gender studies, you are surprising no one.
Lazy lazy lazy.
Nothing is useless . It only time decided. Remember in India too many enginnering college now govt. Decide no more engineer college.
Wat u mean usefulness is which helps to earn for living.
It's only useless if you don't use it for something bigger…
Some of the things on this list such as philosophy and art history have no place being there. Itâs really ignorant of you to position them as such; philosophy was the basis of everything and preceded maths, science, religion, all of which I bet you donât consider useless. Philosophy is an esoteric academic, yes, but just because you donât have the mindset required to study it doesnât mean you are right in dismissing it. Itâs far from useless.
Philosophy major is useless but is still a useful class necessary for anyone interested in law, politics, and government
I'm 17 and soon gonna be in University and I need help. Im kinda into studying about history, you know learn about how does our ancestors live before. and im a curious person like i want to know about stuff. what kind of course should i take? should I take archaeology?
I think when people talk about âuseless degreesâ they should differentiate ones that are just poor financial decisions from truly âuselessâ degrees.
The study of philosophy is not useless, but spending tens of thousands of dollars to study it at college when there are much cheaper ways to do so is a bad financial move.
Philosophy is the pinnacle of Academia. It might be useless if you acquire it not for that purpose. However, there is nothing superior.
Philosophy and art history actually get more people into jobs than you think. It's more about transferable skills nowadays
Commenters: OMG, this video is wrong! Philosophy is a very useful subject to study! OMG, Plato is BAE!
Rational Folk: A Philosophy degree is what is useless. The actual investment of money towards that credential is useless in the free market. No one derives value from your ethical and existential ruminations. You cannot start a company with your ruminations unless you decide to monetize your degree skills doing something completely different, maybe through pursuing a Law degree or making videos, but at that point, you are not engaged in the pure act of philosophy you claim would have any value in the economy. It can be argued, of course, that personal Philosophy education is useful as it does increase one's wisdom and awareness to complex subjects, but it is too intangible to leverage for monetary value in the economy.
The difference between an idealist idiot and actually knowing what the world wants.
Philosophy is great mann â€ïž
looks like the 2.1k dislikes have 2.1k useless college degrees hahah just kidding
