We answer a lot of financial questions
you know for people how to pay their bill we also award financial aid to the
full-time undergraduate population so that’s merit scholarships in conjunction
with admissions need-based grants work-study loan programs both federal
and alternative programs we also administer financial aid for the
graduate students of arts sciences and engineering as well as the Warner school, the Simon school, and the entire School of Nursing we’re located in 13 Wallace
Hall which is one level below the admissions office usually when people
show up the first thing whether they call or they show up in person is they
see our front desk F which some of which is full-time staff and some of which are
student employees who are trained to answer a lot of questions that people
are just generally going to having about financial aid in addition to that every
student whether they’re undergrad or grad is assigned a specific counselor I
think the biggest thing I run into is people think that they won’t qualify for
financial aid and so they never even bother to ask about it and then they’re
surprised to find out that they actually do qualify for some type of financial
aid it might not be free money is just a grant but a lot of times work-study can
be really helpful for families or there’s loan programs that are better
than what they realize are out there and so by talking to us they can find out
all the different resources another thing we talk a lot too usually the
older students about is they have a lot of ideas that if they get money from
somewhere else will just take away on their money so they don’t pursue it and
that’s not true usually they can get RA credits so they can get outside
scholarships and all it will do is make their bill less it won’t actually take
away their financial aid a fair number of the people in our office actually
went to the U of R so we really do understand the questions that they have
and why they’re coming in the reason that I work in financial aid and the
reason that a lot of people work in financial aid is because we care so
deeply about students and about higher ed and what we’re really here for our
mission is to try to get more people access to college so I think sometimes
that might help break down some barriers for people to realize that the reason I
do this job is because I really care about the students and I care about the parents’ children and I’m trying to get them through
college so I think that we all have a passion for working here and I think
that that’s really important for people to know when they come in to talk to us
we really truly want to help them that’s why we came to work that day our
financial aid office is set up to be a really personalized experience just like
the rest of the experience at Rochester you know so everything is geared on a
really individual basis and you’re assigned a specific person that you work
with while you’re here and everything that we do is targeted towards each
individual person you our end goal is trying to get students who really fit
with the Rochester curriculum and who really want to be at Rochester we want
that to be possible for them and we’ll be here to help them every step of the
way all the way through graduation
