the universe is a place that evokes many words for me it’s a sense of pride it’s a home a dream come true and the place where I’ve gained confidence to tackle my dreams well it’s a place that is both global and local this is a place of excellence but I’ve also always associated it with a bit of radicalism it’s a place where you can wander through knowledge it’s a great place to work a great place to teach and a great place to do the research that I’ve always wanted to do the University of Manchester is about new people and new knowledge and the impact of both in society it’s a strong institution with a clear sense of purpose the university is a beacon of interdisciplinary research this is a place where I feel I’m genuinely treasured it’s progressive egalitarian humanistic and inventive it’s a fantastic learning environment to its knowledge it’s learning it’s innovation is the heart of Manchester to me this is home is where I’m gonna it’s a vibrant and exciting community of students and staff on a fantastic emerging campus in a great city on Chester the original modern city I’m a proud Mancunian first day I went to senior school our forum teacher made a speech boys Manchester is the city of the Chartists and the suffragettes of Peterloo and free trade the University of Manchester’s place in intellectual history is arguably second to none you start listing the names Alan Turing Bernhard Louisville Rutherford Schuester it’s a place where John Dalton presented his atomic theory it’s the place where nuclear pioneers like hands Geiger James Chadwick were trained and did research this is a great city a historic city of struggle and a social progress and this is a great University within that city the university’s contribution to the long-term success of the city is incalculable we couldn’t develop the sort of Manchester we want for the future without the active support and contribution of the University of Manchester is that important I came because I was attracted to the atmosphere and the collegial spirit that you can find here Cancer Research is a priority because first of all is one of the big problems in society secondly because the University of Manchester is specially well placed through its interactions between the National Health Service the cancer research campaign and the University which are interested in tackling together the problem of cancer Manchester has invested heavily in nuclear research facilities what I value most is the commitment that the University has shown the links and the commitment to work with industry and the commitment to attract world leading scientists there are so many things to value about working with the unit to Manchester my wife and I have been to a number of local communities in distant countries where the policies that are being implemented there are improving the outcomes of people’s lives and those policies have been derived from the research and knowledge that have been generated at the Brooks world poverty Institute at the University of Manchester the most valuable parts being here is scientific freedom and exciting collaborators precision to graphene is developing quite fast in University and the reason for this University of Manchester being one of the largest University managed to collect critical mass of people in different areas of science who collectively push graphene research quite fast and in too many different directions biotechnology really is at the core of sustainable manufacturing processes in certainly is the future as we do transition from our reliance on the petrochemical industry it’s going to be a source of new chemicals new materials and of course bioenergy as we move forward and consequently it’s a crucially important area of investigation people are the most important part of this university staff our students are many many external stakeholders and we put a lot of time and investment into helping them to achieve their potential every year thousands of students graduate from the University of Manchester and they go on to make a major contribution to the wider world I think the defining characteristics of our students who in Manchester are own excellence academic excellence Manchester is superb at providing both the the specific education that you want but also it gives you that rounded experience of growing up in one of the world’s major cities the university helped me develop a sense of belonging this is really the place where people from around the world study and lift together I’ve been able to interact with different renown scientists and different people from all cultures and backgrounds that has created a bond that’s going to help me in my future academically it’s yeah I can wrestle anymore on the sports side of things you know I’ve come here with you know with great aspirations to the Olympics and I’ve walked away with now five World Championship vests and hopefully an Olympics in the future social responsibility for the University of Manchester is one of its three core goals we take the way we make a difference to the world around us very very seriously it’s not just a slogan when they talk about social engagement is not just a cliche they’re very passionate about community and social development knowing that I’m part of that makes me really proud the university’s is an excellent partner for us and the schools that we work we’re part of a network and anytime we have any kind of project going on the university’s always there to support us in what we’re doing whatever the project involves Manchester is definitely the best University it’s fantastic at research but it provides a great student experience it’s in a brilliant City and it makes a real difference to our communities you
