My name is Kerra Hunter. I am the Assistant Dean and
Director of International Student Services. I’m originally from
Spanish Town, Jamaica. Well, the Office of
International Student Services provides F1 immigration
advising for all our students from abroad who come
to study at Colgate. I’m Makiko Filler. I am Assistant Director of
Office of International Student Services. I am originally
from Osaka, Japan. So what’s unique here at Colgate
is we have very strong campus partners. We provide immigration advising,
and we offer programming throughout their four years. So when students get here,
the first big thing we do is have all the incoming
first-year students greet each other. They’re supported by our
current population of students who serve as orientation leaders
and core group leaders who greet our students at the
airport, escort them to campus, and then we have a week of
events and sessions geared at helping international
students to get familiar with Colgate’s campus,
to learn more about Colgate’s policies, to make
friends most importantly, and just to get
familiar with Colgate. Hi, my name is Minjoo Kim. I’m from South Korea. I’m from a small town
called Jeonju I decided to become an
orientation leader because I feel what the first
years are going through, and I really want to
be there for them. We all came here and we
all had our differences, but we came here and we
formed the community instantly. I have a sense of
belonging in this community. And ISO gave me that feeling. So I’m really thankful for that. Most importantly, we
are a small office, and we are truly a family
for international students. One of the things that helps
us in the roles we play is that myself as a director and
the assistant director of OISS both experienced moving
to a different country, this country, for college, and
so we truly empathize and help students navigate the
processes that we ourselves have navigated. It is wonderful for me to be
able to say that I love my job. And the motivation of me
coming to work every single day is I’m in a place that I can
witness that student growth and success in their
four years and beyond. We are there to help students
from the start to the end. Our goal is to get
everybody to graduation. And when we say we are
committed to helping students get through it no
matter what students need, we’re here to
provide assistance.
