Dr. Cesar R. Torres: What’s going on is the
39th Annual Conference of International Association for the Philosophy of Sport. It is the oldest association that devotes
itself to the study of sport, physical activity, play, games, and physical exercise. We have around 110 attendees from all continents. Countries range from Brazil, to Australia,
to Germany, to Spain, to Nigeria, to Canada and of course, the United States. The philosophy of sport as a discipline, takes
a sport in a very broad way. So, as I said before, we not only study
organized sports, but also different physical activities, including physical education. So, although we study how a sport is run and
organized and planned, we also study what you don’t see of a sport, for example the
ethics of cheating or breaking the rules or cutting corners in order to accomplish the
goal of the game. We also talk about aesthetics, the value of
a sport, and how a sport really can be meaningful in our lives. When we devote so much attention and dollars
to sports, those are some of the central questions we philosophers address in our job.
