My Mom, when she passed away, that was the
hardest thing for me. I knew that I had to continue with my schooling because
that’s what she wanted first and foremost. I’m going to get my degree and I’m going to
keep going. And so I know she would be extremely proud of us. I’m so grateful for this. It
changed my life. I probably wouldn’t be going to school. I’d probably be
working full time and I’m glad they gave me this opportunity to continue in my education. This has been one of the biggest things that has happened to our family. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. And I think my Dad would feel super proud to see that I’m becoming
independent. You know I think that’s a blessing in his eyes. I grew up in the Philippines. I immigrated here
when I was thirteen. I had a hard time making friends and communicating to people. I wasn’t
really planning on going to college. I wanted to be pursue dance. I would come every week
and I would just sit there and watch dancers rehearse. I would imagine myself dancing with them.
I was coming in because this is where I wanted to be. When I told my parents I chose to be
a dance major, they didn’t really support it. I mean to this day I still feel like they’re
not really there with me. But I think I’m proving to them that you can make it as a
dancer. I would say that this university is my home. I get my motivation here everyday. You always have people who inspire you along
the way. I carried the shame of being told that I was stupid. That inspired me to say
I will be a classroom teacher, but I will never put a student through that. In my classroom,
the children will be inspired. They will be told that they are great and that they can
do it. As a parent, you have different priorities. My experience was not to be part of the campus
life like a young student. My experience was to complete this teaching credential. It was
the support that I had from my husband and my family and then now the university to say yes
we are here for you. You can do this. What else can I say I mean it’s amazing that
I didn’t do this alone. Long Beach State gave me that opportunity and without that
I would not have completed my education. It helped me realize who I am so that I can give
back to the community. Every person can realize who you are but every person needs someone
to tell them that they can. So when you’re supporting a university you’re saying I
believe that somebody else can and I want to be part of that. Why wouldn’t they want
to do that why wouldn’t you want to support Long Beach State? So that you give the opportunity
for every person to realize their own dream. It made a difference in my life and I know
it is making a difference in the lives of many others. I declare Long Beach is more
than a place, it’s a promise. I declare that Long Beach is more than a university,
it’s my home. I declare Long Beach has been a blessing in my life.
