Ten years of success | University of Huddersfield International Study Centre

Student experience, the learner journey, that’s
what it’s all about. They’ve enjoyed themselves. I think that’s testament, that’s why we’ve
been here for ten years, because it’s a good place to study. One of the most rewarding things for me is
to see students go through that whole journey. I can remember students coming to the International
Study Centre. They performed excellently there, they progressed
into the University. It’s interesting to see how the centre has
come along over the last ten years, and obviously I’ve been here for that full ten years, so
I know what the University was like before we had an International Study Centre. I know what it’s like now, and it’s come
from something that was really very small and not a significant part of what the University
did, to something that’s grown to be quite significant as part of what the University
does. As an International student when I came here,
I had some challenges, I had to settle down, and the ISC was great in support. Now that I am part of the ISC and being a
tutor. I feel like I have a better understanding
from students’ perspectives as well. I can support them better and understand their
problem, and provide them the actual support that they need, and guidance. So I’ve been at the University for more than
forty years, so I’ve spent an awful long time here already, and I spent many, many years
as an Engineering Professor. What I saw is that when our domestic students
integrated properly with International students, it enhanced their experience significantly. The best part of being an International student
is you mix with other nationalities. This played a huge role in my life because
I had never seen so many people from different countries at one place. I got to know each of them, and learn their
culture, learning their languages. So what does the future hold for the International
Study Centre? We want to see more students, we want to make
sure that we’ve got procedures and processes in place that really does give them the best
experience that they can have. I think that they, here at the ISC, we’re
very lucky this year we have got such a diverse group of students, who seem very future focused,
and they really sort of help each other and they just create a nice environment, and I’m
just really proud to be part of that sort of atmosphere, and I’m part of their every
day while they’re here.
