Temple University Spanish & Portuguese Graduate Program

I have been a teaching assistant at the Department of Spanish
and Portuguese for about three years now and it’s given me the
opportunity to witness the experience of higher education teaching firsthand. In preparation for this we usually go through
extensive training, workshops and seminars that
are offered both by the university and the
department of spanish and
portuguese.
I chose the graduate program in
Spanish at Temple University because I appreciated the
contextualized approach to
Spanish studies, including Spanish Peninsular
Literature, Latin American
Literature and Hispanic
Linguistics. A truly unique feature of our
department is the number of
scholars specializing in the literature
of the twentieth century and I chose it as my area
of specialization to be able to benefit from
such a diverse guidance.
The professors incorporate
their own research often into the classes that we take.
It’s really exciting as a new
graduate student to see what’s going on in the field
and to become engaged in some
ways in the current debates. ¿Por qué Temple? Primero, en
primero lugar, Temple es un una
universidad pública. Yo he sido estudiante graduado
y creo que la mayoría de los
estudiantes graduados nos
identificamos, nos hemos identificado con el
tipo de educación que una
universidad pública comporta. Por otro lado Temple es la
universidad pública de
Filadelfia. Filadelfia sigue siendo, a
mi entender, la ciudad más interesante
de la costa este. Sigue siendo la ciudad de los
murales, del hip hop y de
Noam Chomsky. I’ve been here since 1991 and I
like it very much because it’s a department that allows a lot of
different disciplines. The students are very different
you have students from all
types of backgrounds, there’s a lot of diversity. The fellowship I have right now
is called Future Faculty Fellowship It’s a fellowship given to
underrepresented groups of minority and women to
pursue my study and to diversify the American professoriate. And as an Asian woman I know
that I’m a very unique person to be in the
department. There’s a lot of
opportunities extended to the graduate students here
in the program: from teaching a teaching
assistantship, to teaching lower level courses, to even developing your own
curriculum and teaching higher level courss
for advanced doctoral students research assistantships,
fellowships, and even working
on the journal that’s in house. The job market in Spanish
applied linguistics is
very good. Our graduates have all gone
on to find academic positions in tenure stream and
non-tenure stream. We have a one hundred percent
placement rate among our
students. Some of them are teaching full
time and are coordinating language programs in other
universities. The fact is that a lot of our
students when they get jobs
they get jobs more as generalists than anything else. So in a sense, the department
helps them learn about different
disciplines so that then they
can actually teach in any kind of job position as opposed to,
you know, as opposed to actually being only a medievalist.
