Tell Us About Your First Lecture? – Western Sydney University

– So, my very first lecture
was really interesting. It was much bigger than I expected. You know, you kind of see
these, er, TV shows, like these American TV shows
of what a lecture looks like and that’s what you think it’ll be
and it’s actually quite different. The lecturer asks you questions and you think,
“Oh, my God, do I say something?” because you’re normally just meant to be
sitting there mute. – It was a bit intimidating at first but, like,
I really felt like you were… like, you were eased into it
quite nicely and there was a lot of guidance through
all your subjects and starting out. – When I walked in and saw the lecturer
doing what they were doing and the way they were presenting,
the way they were so engaging, I’m pretty sure that first lecture, the lecturer was standing up
on the table, as well, and they had very interesting
pedagogical practices. Erm, and, yeah, then automatically it
cancelled out any other standards I had. Like, this is the standard,
UWS is the new standard to me. – My first lecture was so long ago now but I remember it had a big first
impression on me and I just thought, “I’m so glad I’ve chosen this uni
and this course because I could never imagine either
of my other options for universities to be so open, free, fun,” you know,
and it was a great first lecture. – Oh, I was amazed, actually, because halfway through
the first lecture, Matt stopped the lecture completely and he had drawn a graph
at the beginning of the class, nobody knew what it was about, I was
worried we’d do some maths or something, but halfway through, he just pointed out that our concentration levels
had dipped completely and so now it was time for us
to have a conversation with each other and he’d ask us a question
and someone would have to answer it. And I remember being fascinated by that. That was like, “Oh, my goodness, where did this lecturer come from?
I want him again!”
