Teaching Tips | Exercises to Strengthen Listening Skills

This is a teaching tip from Humber’s Centre
for Teaching And Learning. Exercises to strengthen listening skills. What can be done to ensure students are getting
as much out of lessons as they can? Before the lesson, the students can be primed
for listening carefully. One method to do so is to ask the students
to first write out what they expect to learn from the lesson before it begins. Another warm up question for the students
is “what were the most important aspects of the readings?” Another way to strengthen the focus of the
students on the lesson is to arrange that they don’t take any notes during the first
five to fifteen minutes of class, then have them summarize in their notes what was said
afterward. The lack of a safety net encourages students
to lean in, so to speak. Alternatively, at the end of class, a few
minutes can be spent on having the students summarize the lesson with a partner. This can illuminate differences in what they’ve
taken away, and can also be incentive to have done a good job of listening. Try one of these listening boosters soon!
