Teaching Childbirth Class – 5 Essential Items

February 20, 2020 2 By Stanley Isaacs

Hey everybody it’s Alice Turner the Doula
behind YourDoulaBag. Today we are talking about teaching private childbirth
classes and I’m going to go through my five essentials for teaching
a class.I’ve been teaching Lamaze for about five years and started
teaching more private childbirth classes recently. These are the
five things I feel like are must-haves for my practice. Number one is
a demonstration baby,] and placenta, cord, uterus, amniotic sac everything
altogether. That makes demonstrating the process nice. Along with
that the pelvis. So I got all of those at childbirth graphics. Those
are essential. I use them in every class. My second, number two are some
handy compact poster sets.Instead of doing a PowerPoint or something different visually
that I would do in my group class I do this set.
It’s from Plum tree Baby. It’s a little tent that I set up and put on
their coffee table and can easily see the posters and what I’m talking
about. Number three in my essentials is a gift for mom. So I like to
do a ball in a cover. And of course we will use the ball during class to
talk about different positions. Then she has it prenatally so she
can be sitting on it. I just think having a gift is super nice and
there’s a lot of benefit to it, moms really love it.so that is number
three. Number four is my Doula bag. I bring my Doula bag to my class
and I take out my tools that I use in labor like a rice sock, massager
those kind of things and I will go through how to use them in labor
and the benefits to them. Number five is my fun part so I like
to bring a couple things to kind of mix it up and make childbirth class
fun because even though I could talk about birth for hours upon end
sometimes it might be a little bit of a topic that not everybody likes
to listen to for hours. So, one of my final items that I bring
is this little bell that I usually put on the coffee table where I’m
teaching and I say that we are going to talk about some topics that definitely
are not topics that you would talk about at a cocktail party.
To break the ice I might hit the bell and warn about the bellringing
topic. I let them know that they can ring the bell too. So we talk about
bloody show, diarrhea. It makes it a little fun. I’ve had a lot of success
with that, bringing fun. My second fun item is this guy, or girl
I should say. The stuffed uterus. You know when we talk about the hard
work of the uterus and just all the biology of labor I have this
girl hidden and I’ll bring her out of my bag. It just brings a smile,
kind of lightens the mood. And who wouldn’t like to see a smiling uterus,
right? So she is my fun item. So those are my five top items to
have for teaching private childbirth class and if you would like this
information in a Little cheat sheet form there is a link down in the description
and go there and we will shoot that sheet to your inbox. If you’ve
enjoyed this video a couple of things you can do, give us a thumbs

Okay I hope you have a great day. Bye. Talk about bloody show,Talk
