Teacher Education

We offer an A.A.T. degree, which is an
Associate of Arts in Teaching, which is really the entry level, the first two
years of a teacher education program. This provides students an opportunity to
explore the field of teaching, to decide if this is their passion, get their early
experiences in teacher education, and then go on to a four-year college or
university to complete their degree. The majority of our students go on to get
their teaching credential and teach in public or private schools, but there are
many other options for educators. For example, museums hire tour guides, zoos
hire people to run their educational programs, so educators have many
opportunities besides the standard public school teaching. Students have the
opportunity to explore the profession and develop the basic foundation in the
knowledge, skills, and competencies of a teacher, and our program’s been carefully
designed in collaboration with our four-year partner institutions, so that
when students complete their A.A.T., they’re ready to go on and be successful at one
of the four-year institutions. The teaching education program is a great program. I knew I want to be a teacher, but after taking the teaching program
with field experience, there’s no doubt in my mind now. We offer students
the opportunity to obtain a low-cost, quality education. Our faculty are very
experienced, they’re accomplished, and they’re dedicated professionals, and
they’re highly committed to student success. We have an emphasis on
developing critical thinking, on multicultural education and diversity, on
social justice and educational equity. To get the opportunity to both observe
practicing teachers in their classes as well as implement lessons themselves, so you get that hands-on experience through our program. I’m really just observing
the teacher, getting to know more about what being the teacher is, and it’s just looking into the classroom in a different perspective, and it’s really awesome. We’re interested in helping students
develop their creativity, their initiative, their critical thinking, their
innovation – it’s those kinds of qualities that are really needed in today’s
classrooms. They really set you up to be prepared and to be ready for anything
that you might encounter in the real field. I really love the opportunity the
program provides for me and other faculty members to get to know and have
an impact on an amazing group of students who will be tomorrow’s
professionals in the field.
