T Level industry placements – science, University of Salford
She came here to have a real taste of the real world experience… of working as a technician in an education industry. And rather than give her a taste… I think we’ve been able to give her a three course meal. When I did a placement I wasn’t as interested in it… but when I started doing it, it was like… “Ok, this is going to help me to become an haematologist”. When I went back to college it made it seem like… I knew everything that was going on. It was like… “I’ve already done this before”. Ola showed us a side of great enthusiasm… throughout her placement here. Ola’s passion for science shone through like a star. Being a technician actually made me learn… how much work it was. It was actually really fun, though, I really liked it. These students are on the cusp of starting their next steps… so they’re finishing up with us and they really do need… that chance to gain that confidence. And I think this is a really brilliant way to send them off… into the world of work, further education, or an apprenticeship. Whatever it is they choose to do… this is a great stepping stone between college… and that next step. It makes them stand head and shoulders above other applicants… and that is so valuable. It gives you something to talk about at a career interview… and it’s that one spark that makes you stand out. There is a huge skills gap coming. We’ve got this huge black hole… looming on the technical workforce front. And there’s no running away from it, we need to see… new technicians coming through. The placement made my decision to come to this uni… and also to do biomedical science. Is was actually a big impact on me to do the placement… because I was indecisive in the beginning. But, after I did that, I knew what I wanted to be… what I wanted to do, and what uni I was going to.
