Welcome to the Department of Computer
Science at the University of York The department has an international
reputation for excellence in teaching and research and our new purpose-built home on the new campus expansion as Heslington East will help keep us at the forefront of
this discipline. We’re going to take a look around to give you a flavor of what it’s like to be part of computer
science at York. Our new building gives more space than
ever and our pod is a great example of a
work and social area the common room leads to two large
seminar rooms which we use specifically for computer
science teaching The building has a dedicated teaching
wing, housing both lab space and teaching rooms. The move to Heslington East has meant
the we can provide even more software lab space including lab specifically for
postgraduate and undergraduate students these are accessible 24/7 so students
can come here to work it any time of the day and night we make sure that these facilities are
regularly refreshed to keep up with any changes in
technology. We also have a number of research labs within the building itself for our academics and research students. One example of this is our interactive home laboratory. Here
new domestic technology particularly for older people or those
with disabilities is trialled within a real-life setting
this work prompts new prototypes such as digital cookbooks which should
over time help people to remain independent for
longer. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius We’re surrounded by some really nice but also very clever researchers you know, really famous professers and up and coming research students aswell, lots of very clever people, some stimulating environment to work in. to come here and study is my best
decision in my life because improved my
technical skills as well as some soft skills. I like the department and like the people We aim to give all our students
a broad understanding of computer science whichever area they choose to focus on
in their studies. This means teaching in a principled way to give our students the best chance in
an increasingly competitive marketplace an example of this is our
undergraduate programs which cover both hardware and software
and how they integrate into the design of computer systems. The software labs have got everything you want They’ve got computer for everybody and they’re really fast. Computer science degree program is very very enjoyable and it offers a huge variety of different
subjects and strengths All lecturers are very very friendly and always willing to help. The software
labs are open 24/7 you can come in at the weekend can stay
as late as you want. Apart from being very enthusiastic about
there subject and just being very brilliant in general all of our lectures are amazing researchers. Our new building is the expression of our
dedication to creating a world-class student experience and providing a stimulating environment
to support our staff and students our postgraduate taught programmes build upon the research being undertaken in the department and address the challenges faced by a
dynamic industry sector. We collaborate extensively with industry
allowing us to ensure our teaching at all levels is
relevant to emerging trends and this gives our students a great
start in the race for jobs. More of our graduates gain employment
within six months than any other UK computer science
department. We’re really pleased that our new home has also enabled us to have equipment that we’ve never been able to house before on new multi spectral light stage one of
only two in the world and the cyber scanner in the new dark
labs help to keep our computer vision research at the cutting edge in 3D computer
vision. Here in computer science we aim to foster an academic community that realises the potential in all our students, from access to
facilities such as those you’ve seen in this video through a supervision and support system
working in tandem with York’s collagiate structure we produce graduates that choose the
path they want to take whether that’s following a successful
academic career or being welcomed to the workplace by keen employers. After you come here, study hard. To find out more about the department and the programs we offer visit our
