CAMPUS? DAKARAI TURNER WENT LOOKING.>IN 20-08 .. THE U-S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TOOK ABOUT 53 RACIAL HARASSMENT COMPLAINTS AT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY… THIS YEAR — THAT NUMBER HAS NEARLY TRIPLED. EDUCATION EXPERTS SAY -CLEARLY SOMETHING- IS WRONG WITH COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES….AND BOTH STUDENTS áANDá ADMINISTRATORS ARE OUT TO CHANGE IT. THE IMAGES HAVE BEEN SEEN AT HARVARD, AT PRINCETON, AT ITHICA COLLEGE AND AT CLAREMOUNT MCKENNA IN CALIFORNIA — — AND MOST NOTABLY, LAST MONTH, AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI. STUDENTS THERE WERE CONCERNED ABOUT DIVERSITY AND CULTURAL SENSITIVITY… QUESTIONS RAISED AFTER SOME SAID UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION DID NOT ACT TO ADDRESS A SERIES OF RACIAL INCIDENTS ON CAMPUS QUICKLY ENOUGH. BUT ALSO LAST MONTH, STUDENTS AT TOWSON UNIVERSITY WENT INTO INTERIM PRESIDENT TIMOTHY CHANDLER’S OFFICE UNANNOUNCED…DEMANDING MANY OF THE SAME THINGS AS STUDENTS AT MIZZOU. THEIR MEETING LASTED WELL INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS…. BUT THEIR LIST OF DEMANDS WAS SIGNED.>ONE OF THEIR MAJOR DEMANDS IS INCREASING THEIR DIVERSITY IN FACULTY, MAKING SURE THE CURRICULUM IS MEETING SOME OF THEIR NEEDS. DR. LAWRENCE BROWN IS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF HEALTH AND POLICY… AND HAS MADE A CAREER STUDYING DIVERSITY, POLICY AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION. WHILE NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY LOCAL PROTESTS — WHICH INCLUDE SMALLER-SCALE DEMONSTRATIONS AT JOHN’S HOPKINS AND AT UMD COLLEGE PARK…. BROWN SAYS A YOUNGER GENERATION OF STUDENTS, PERHAPS, HAS COME INTO MATURATION IN THE AGE OF THE INTERNET…. WHEN VIDEOS OF PERCEIVED INJUSTICES, LIKE USE OF FORCE BY POLICE, ARE A CLICK AWAY. THAT, IN AND OF ITSELF, HAS SORT OF CAUSED YOUNG STUDENTS — PEOPLE IN UNIVERSITIES — TO EXAMINE HOW INJUTICE MAY BE PROLIFERATING IN OUR SOCIETY IN OTHER SECTORS THOSE OTHER SECTORS, FOR STUDENTS HOLDING PROTESTS, HAVE NOT BEEN UNIQUE TO THE UNIVERSITIES, BROWN SAYS. IN ADDITION TO THE USAGE OF RACIAL EPITHETS RAISED BY STUDENTS AT MIZZOU, MANY STUDENTS SAID THEY FELT UNSAFE ON CAMPUS. BUT THAT SAFETY MAY BE MORE THAN PHYSICAL SECURITY, ACCORDING TO BROWN. AT YALE, FOR EXAMPLE, STUDENTS THERE PROTESTED AFTER A BLACK STUDENT SAID SHE WAS TURNED AWAY FROM A FRATERNITY PARTY…. AND THE SIMPLE FACT THAT STUDENTS, BOTH WHITE AND BLACK, ARE REQUIRED TO REFER TO HEADS OF CAMPUS DORMS AS “MASTER.” THOSE ARE PART OF WHAT BROWN SAYS ARE KNOWN AS “MICRO- AGGRESSIONS.”>WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO CALL SOMEONE MASTER? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE IN THE CLASSROOM, BUT MAYBE NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE NATIVE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, OR NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE LATINO EXPERIENCE “IT’S MORE THAN THAT.” WHEN STUDENTS MET WITH INTERIM PRESIDENT CHANDLER AT TOWSON….HE SIGNED A LONG LIST OF DEMANDS…. A LIST THAT INCLUDED AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF BLACK FACULTY AT THE SCHOOL…. COURSES ON CULTURAL COMPETENCY … AND A ZERO-TOLERENCE POLICY FOR OFFENSIVE EPITHETS. STUDENTS AT MIZZOU DEMANDED MUCH OF THE SAME….BUT IT’S FACULTY DIVERSITY BROWN HILIGHTS AS A STARTIN POINT.>THERE’S A HISTORY AND A LEGACY THAT OFTEN IS MISSED — THE NUACNCES ARE MISSED, WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE THIS DIVERSITY IN THE FACULTY.>AND THE MESSAGE STUDENTS AROUND THE COUNTY ARE DELIVERING TO THEIR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ARE TAKING ROOT.>”I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY”>AT MIZZOU — THOUGH BOTH THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT AND THE SYSTEM’S CHANCELLOR RESIGNED…IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS AT THE SCHOOL BEGAN. AND AT JOHN’S HOPKINS JUST MONDAY … PRESIDENT RONALD DANIELS HELD A FORUM WITH THE SCHOOL’S BLACK STUDENT UNION….. COVERING ISSUES ECHOED AROUND THE COUNTRY. IT’S REALLY JUST STUDENTS BEING INSPIRED THAT INSPIRATION IS PROPELLED BY THE DAYS NEWS…..OF KILLINGS ON TV AND POLITICAL INACTION AND SOCIAL DISPERARITIES IN PRINT….. FEELINGS OF RESPONSIBILITY ON ONSESELF TO CHANGE TOMORROW. IN COMPARISON, BROWN SAYS, HISTORICALLY, STUDENTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT THE FRONT OF THE CURVE. IN THE EARLY SIXTIES, WHEN THERE WAS A SIT-IN MOVEMENT, WHEN THERE WAS A DE-SEGREGATION MOVEMENT AT LUNCH COUNTERS, A LOT OF THAT WAS LED BY STUDENTS, AS WELL.>AT U-M-D-COLLEGE PARK….THE SCHOOL SAYS ITS STUDENTS AND THE SCHOOL’S PRESIDENT ARE WORKING TOWARD A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF EXPECTATIONS. AND WHEN TOWSON’S INTERIM PRESIDENT SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WITH STUDENTS…HE AGREED HE WOULD RESIGN IF SOME OF THEIR CONCERNS WERE NOT ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY.
