Starbucks College Achievement Plan: Graduate Stories

Starbucks College Achievement Plan: Graduate Stories

I kind of feel like I’ve kind of gone as
far as I could go with just a high school education, and not really having
much direction. I kept on struggling with that question “What matters?” you know, and I wanted to do something that matters in life and so I dropped out and I kept on
asking myself “What matters, what matters?” I didn’t know what to do. I was stuck,
and Starbucks hired me, and it was the goal to work there and get my degree so
I could have somewhere to go and somewhere that welcomed me. I continued growing my career. I moved from barista up to store manager, and I enrolled in
the College Achievement program, and I was like I can do school, and have a
degree and have a career, debt-free. I struggled in regular schooling, pretty
much dropped out at my local community college, came to ASU and have flourished. Great staff, great teachers, phenomenal program in information technology. I love it here. What I’ve found through Starbucks and
through Arizona, was a massive amount of support that like slowly started to
change how I not only look at myself, but how I look at education as a whole. I just am blown away by the amount of personal attention that the ASU staff
gave to me, and I know if I was receiving it, I wasn’t alone. Listening to all the partners, like, you guys are my support system, like the baristas, the shift
supervisors, the store managers, like I would not be here today, if it wasn’t for Starbucks. I developed a very severe depression, and it really interfered with
my school work. I really, I can’t believe how lucky I am to have been able to do
this College Achievement Plan program, because I was so scared to go back to
school. I was so scared to, um, you know go into debt, and put all that work in
knowing that my health could go back down at any point and it might not work
out for me. Starbucks was so important for me in that way. It was that kind of
stable place for me to always go back to, it was that constant source of support. The support and the culture has like
changed me radically to the fact that I went from believing I can’t do anything,
to believing that I could accomplish anything I feel like Starbucks has really helped me find the person inside that I was meant to be. I think I’ve found that what matters in life is the people around you and what you do for them. The more I dove into the company and our principles, the more I realize that, that is what we do. I’m like a non-stop record just telling
them all the time, “This is the benefit, this is the one you do because no matter
what happens, you take this with you.” We come from all walks of life and this is
a company that supports us, and helps us grow, and gives us college degrees. I just have this passion bursting out of me, for my major and my future and I feel like I
have Starbucks to thank for that. Congratulations everyone, I’m so proud of you.
