THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF GRADUATE EDUCATION IS A PARTICULARLY NOTEWORTHY ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND THE 779 STUDENTS FROM THE MAY 2018 CLASS WHO WILL RECEIVE GRADUATE DEGREES TODAY WILL JOIN A VERY SPECIAL GROUP. EDUCATION IS MEANINGLESS UNLESS IT IS PUT TO USE. THE INTELLECTUAL MATURITY YOU HAVE GAINED THROUGH YOUR GRADUATE STUDIES HAS PROVIDED YOU WITH THE GROUNDING TO CREATE NEW KNOWLEDGE, TO APPLY THAT KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION IN THE WORLD, AND TO CONTINUE THE PROCESS OF LIFELONG LEARNING. WHAT YOU WILL CARRY OF VALUE WITH YOU FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF GRADUATE EDUCATION IS NOT A PIECE OF PAPER ATTESTING TO YOUR DEGREE BUT, RATHER, THE POTENTIAL AND SOME OF THE POWERFUL TOOLS YOU WILL NEED TO LIVE THE KIND OF LIFE THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE SHAPING OF THE WORLD. SO, THIS EVENING, WE HONOR YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AND CELEBRATE WITH YOU, BUT WE URGE YOU TO REMEMBER THAT YOUR HARD WORK WAS NOT JUST FOR THIS DAY. THE POINT AND PURPOSE OF IT ALL EXTENDS WELL INTO THE FUTURE. AND WE WILL ALL BE WATCHING TO SEE WHERE YOUR JOURNEY TAKES YOU. [APPLAUSE] [CHEERS] PLEASE BE SEATED. >>I NOW INVITE LAWRENCE INSERRA TRUSTEE OF THE UNIVERSITY TO BRING GREETINGS AND TO PRESENT OUR HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT.>>GOOD EVENING, AND WELCOME. FOR OVER 85 YEARS, MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY HAS EMBRACED GRADUATE EDUCATION AND PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT STATEWIDE ROLE IN PREPARING DISTINGUISHED PROFESSIONALS. IN THE 1930s, MONTCLAIR STATE WAS THE FIRST OF THE STATE COLLEGES TO OFFER MASTER’S DEGREES. IN THE 1990s, WE BECAME THE FIRST OF THE STATE COLLEGES TO BECOME A UNIVERSITY AND TO OFFER DOCTORAL DEGREES. IN 2016, MONTCLAIR STATE WAS THE FIRST OF THE STATE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TO BE RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY AS A DOCTORAL RESEARCH UNIVERSITY. AND, IN 2017, THE UNIVERSITY WAS FURTHER RECOGNIZED BY THE STATE AS A NEW JERSEY PUBLIC RESEARCH UNIVERSITY. THESE HISTORIC CHANGES HAVE TRANSFORMED MONTCLAIR STATE AT EVERY STEP, ESTABLISHING AND DISTINGUISHING OUR STATURE AS AN INSTITUTION IN THE FIELDS FOR WHICH YOU ARE BEING AWARDED DEGREES TODAY. YOU HAVE BECOME PART OF THE HISTORY OF MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY. AND, ON BEHALF OF THE UNIVERSITY’S TRUSTEES, I CONGRATULATE YOU AND WISH YOU A FULFILLING FUTURE. IT IS NOW MY HONOR TO PRESENT OUR HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT. MAY I ASK YOU TO DIRECT YOUR ATTENTION TO THE VIDEO SCREENS. ♫♫>>JOHN COMES FROM THE WORLD OF FILM AND PLAY PRODUCTION, THEATRICAL PRODUCTION, THE KIND OF WORK THAT HE’S DONE HAS BROUGHT HIM REAL ACCLAIM. HE’S WON TONY’S AND OTHER AWARDS AND HE’S MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN THIS BUSINESS THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME.>>I CONTINUE TO THINK OF MYSELF AS A PRODUCER. I ALSO THINK OF MYSELF AS A FACILITATOR OF GOOD WORK. IF THERE’S A GOOD IDEA I CAN HELP BRING IT TO LIFE AND LET TALENTED PEOPLE MAKE IT HAPPEN, THAT’S A BIG WIN. RIGHT?>>HE IS AN INNOVATOR. HE HAS PASSION FOR WHAT HE DOES AND FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE A PART OF IT.>>WE’RE ALSO A REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER, AND WE’RE OPENING A RESIDENTIAL TOWER ACROSS THE STREET.>>TODAY, I CAN SAY TOUCHDOWN FOR THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, AND A GREAT PROJECT THAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE IN THIS CITY.>>NEWARK IS NOW EVOLVING INTO A 24/7 LIVE, WORK, PLAY DESTINATION. ♫♫>>FOR HIM, IT’S NOT ABOUT SELF. IT’S ABOUT TOTAL OUTCOME AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE.>>HE’S A TRUE ASSET AND A FRIEND, INDEED, OF THE CITY OF NEWARK.>>WHETHER A KID BECOMES AN ARTIST, WHETHER A KID ADVANCES A CAREER IN THE ARTS IS REALLY KIND OF IMMATERIAL TO ME. WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT IS THE SKILLS AND THE COMMUNICATION AND THE SOPHISTICATED THINKING THAT COMES FROM ENGAGING IN THE ARTS. THE MORE PEOPLE FEEL AS IF THEY HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PERFORMING ARTS, THE BETTER OUR SOCIETY IS. LOVE WHAT YOU DO, AND DO WHAT YOU LOVE. ♫♫ [APPLAUSE]>>I WOULD ASK PROVOST GINGERICH AND THE GRAND MARSHAL TO PLEASE ESCORT JOHN SCHREIBER TO THE LECTERN.>>JOHN SCHREIBER, OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER, YOU HAVE PRODUCED SCORES OF CONCERTS, AND SUCH MAJOR FESTIVALS AS THE NATIONWIDE KOOL JAZZ FESTIVAL, THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL, AND THE NEWPORT JAZZ AND FOLK FESTIVALS. AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF SOCIAL ACTION AND ADVOCACY FOR PARTICIPANT MEDIA, YOU WERE PART OF AN EXECUTIVE TEAM THAT PRODUCED SUCH CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FILMS AS “AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH,” “LINCOLN,” “THE HELP,” AND “WAITING FOR SUPERMAN.” AS A PRODUCER, YOU CREATED AND PRODUCED THE MARK TWAIN PRIZE FOR AMERICAN HUMOR AT THE KENNEDY CENTER, THE NEW YORKER FESTIVAL, THE HARD ROCK LIVE TELEVISION SERIES FOR VH1, AND THE NATIONWIDE GRAMMY FESTIVALS. YOU RECEIVED A TONY AWARD IN 2002 AS LEAD PRODUCER OF “AT LIBERTY,” ELAINE STRITCH’S ONE-WOMAN SHOW, AND A 2004 EMMY AWARD FOR EXECUTIVE PRODUCING THE HBO DOCUMENTARY FILM BASED ON IT. AS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE NEW JERSEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, YOU LEAD ONE OF NEW JERSEY’S PREEMINENT CULTURAL ASSETS, MAKING AN IMPRESSIVE ARRAY OF CREATIVE PERFORMANCES AVAILABLE TO MORE THAN HALF A MILLION PEOPLE EACH YEAR. UNDER YOUR STEWARDSHIP, THE ARTS CENTER IS NOW THE COUNTRY’S MOST DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN TERMS OF PROGRAMMING, AUDIENCE AND STAFF, PRESENTING MORE THAN 500 EVENTS A YEAR AND PROVIDING ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO MORE THAN 80,000 CHILDREN AND FAMILIES EACH SEASON. IN 2013, YOU ADDED THE ARTS CENTER’S REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO TO YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES BECOMING PRESIDENT OF THEATER SQUARE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND SPEARHEADING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 23-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWER, AN IMPORTANT LANDMARK DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FOR THE CITY OF NEWARK. IN RECOGNITION OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS, MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY PROUDLY BESTOWS UPON YOU, JOHN SCHREIBER, THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS, HONORIS CAUSA. [APPLAUSE] >>THANK YOU, PRESIDENT COLE. BY VIRTUE OF THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY, AND UPON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE PRESIDENT AND FACULTY, I CONFER UPON YOU THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS, HONORIS CAUSA WITH ALL THE RIGHTS, DUTIES, PRIVILEGES AND IMMUNITIES THEREUNTO APPERTAINING, OF WHICH THIS DIPLOMA IS THE WRITTEN WITNESS. CONGRATULATIONS. [APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]>>WELL, ODDLY, I FEEL SORT OF AT HOME HERE. [LAUGHTER] THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THIS IS A SPECIAL NIGHT FOR YOU AND IT IS FOR ME TOO. AND HERE’S SOMETHING ALMOST NOBODY KNOWS. THIS IS MY FIRST CAP AND GOWN. [APPLAUSE] YOU SEE, I NEVER GRADUATED COLLEGE. IN THE SECOND SEMESTER OF MY SENIOR YEAR, I TOOK A JOB IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS. I’LL EXPLAIN LATER. IT’S A LONG STORY. [LAUGHTER] SO THIS HONOR MEANS MORE TO ME THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. SO I’M GRATEFUL TO THE UNIVERSITY, TO THE BOARD, AND TO ALL OF YOU FOR MAKING AN HONEST MAN OUT OF ME. THANK YOU. MY — YEAH, IT’S OKAY. ALL RIGHT. [APPLAUSE] MY BROTHERS, AL AND BRAD, AND MY SON, BEN, AND MY WONDERFUL LIFE PARTNER, VIRGINIA, ARE IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT AS WITNESSES. SO YOU CAN’T TAKE IT BACK. OKAY? [LAUGHTER] AND I KNOW MY MOTHER AND FATHER ARE SMILING DOWN FROM HEAVEN ASKING EACH OTHER WHAT TOOK HIM SO LONG? [LAUGHTER] SO, HELLO THERE. [LAUGHTER] I LOVE A GOOD BABY IN THE HOUSE. DON’T YOU? YOU KNOW? THE MARIINSKY ORCHESTRA DOESN’T LOVE A GOOD BABY IN THE HOUSE, BUT WE DO. RIGHT? RIGHT! SO I WANT TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO BE A CREATIVE, CURIOUS, USEFUL CHANGEMAKER IN YOUR LIFE AND WORK, BUT FIRST, BEFORE I DO THAT, I WANT TO TELL YOU HOW GREAT YOU ARE. WHEN I LEARNED FROM PRESIDENT COLE ABOUT THE DEGREES BEING AWARDED THIS EVENING, I WAS KNOCKED OUT BY THE NUMBER, THE VARIETY, AND THE TREMENDOUS USEFULNESS TO SOCIETY OF THE RANGE OF THEM. I THINK YOU’VE PROBABLY — YOU PROBABLY ARE THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED AUDIENCE PRUDENTIAL HALL HAS EVER HOSTED. GIVE YOURSELVES A ROUND OF APPLAUSE. [APPLAUSE] YOU ALL ARE ACCOUNTN’TS AND — ACCOUNTANTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS, BIOLOGISTS, BUSINESS ADMINISTRATORS, CHEMISTS, CHILD ADVOCATES, DANCERS AND DIGITAL MARKETERS, ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND EDUCATORS. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] LOT OF THOSE IN THE HOUSE. RIGHT? [LAUGHTER] MARINE BIOLOGISTS. [LAUGHTER] MAYBE NOT. YOU NEVER KNOW. AND MATHEMATICIANS. I COULD GO — [CHEERS] I COULD GO ON. I’M NOT EVEN HALFWAY THROUGH THE ALPHABET, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA. THE ENERGY AND COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AND EXCELLENCE YOU EACH EMBODY IS PALPABLE TONIGHT. I CAN FEEL IT OVER THE FOOT LIGHTS. I CAN. SO HUGE CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER FOR THE HUNDREDS OF YOU WHO HAVE ACHIEVED ADVANCED DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES AND FOR THE LOVED ONES WHO SURROUND YOU. THOSE LOVED ONES ARE BURSTING WITH PRIDE. YOUR MOTHERS AND FATHERS, YOUR HUSBANDS AND WIVES AND CHILDREN, YOUR GRANDPARENTS, YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND COUSINS AND FRIENDS, YOUR BIG DAY IS THEIR BIG DAY TOO. YEP. [APPLAUSE] AND IN THE THEATER, WHEN A PERFORMER DOES SOMETHING SPECTACULAR, WE REWARD THEM WITH A STANDING OVATION. SO EACH OF YOU GRADUTES AND THE AMAZING AND SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITIES THAT HELP YOU GET THERE, WELL, I THINK YOU ALL DESERVE TO GIVE YOURSELVES AND EACH OTHER AN MSU STANDING OVATION RIGHT NOW. PLEASE STAND, CONGRATULATE EACH OTHER. YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] THERE YOU GO. THAT’S IT. GREAT. I HAVE A FEELING THAT IS NOT YOUR LAST STANDING “O.” YOU WILL HAVE MORE. BECAUSE YOU’RE HERE TONIGHT, IT’S A SURE THING THAT YOU POSSESS THREE IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS THAT WILL SERVE YOU WELL FOREVER, YOU’RE PERSISTENT, YOU WORK HARD, AND YOU CHERISH THE VALUES OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING SINCE YOU WERE TEENAGERS. MANY OF YOU ARE THE FIRST IN YOUR FAMILY TO ATTAIN A GRADUATE DEGREE. [CHEERS] [APPLAUSE] YOU CHOSE TO ATTEND A GREAT UNIVERSITY WITH A STUDENT BODY WHICH REFLECTS WHAT DAVID DINKINS, WHO WAS NEW YORK’S FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAYOR, CALLS THE GORGEOUS MOSAIC OF OUR COUNTRY. [CHEERS] THAT’S TRUE. AND YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS MAY NOT LOOK LIKE YOU OR WORSHIP LIKE YOU OR HAVE A CULTURAL HERITAGE LIKE YOURS, BUT MY BET IS THAT THEY BELIEVE, LIKE YOU, THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU PERSIST. [CHEERS] YEP. [APPLAUSE] AND I KNOW YOU HAVE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO BE CREATIVE CHANGEMAKERS IN SOCIETY. LET ME GIVE YOU A SMALL EXAMPLE OF WHAT THAT LOOKED LIKE IN MY LIFE. WHEN I WAS 21, LONG TIME AGO, MY FIRST BOSS, GEORGE WEAN SENT ME AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE GREAT NEW YORK BORN JAZZ SINGER SARAH VAUGHAN AS HER TOUR MANAGER. I COULDN’T HAVE GUESSED THAT, 40 YEARS LATER, I’D INVENT AN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ VOCAL COMPETITION, NAME IT AFTER SARAH AND EACH YEAR HAVE ALMOST 1,000 SINGERS COMPETE FROM EVERYWHERE FOR THE TOP PRIZE, TRAVELING WITH SARAH, STANDING AT HER SIDE — STANDING ON THE THE SIDE OF THE STAGE AND HEARING HER SING EVERY NIGHT, WELL, THAT ALWAYS GAVE ME GOOSE BUMPS. AND WHEN I GOT TO THE ARTS CENTER, I TOOK THAT INDELIBLE MEMORY AND GOT CREATIVE WITH IT. WE DEVELOPED A PLATFORM THAT ENABLED YOUNG SINGERS TO TURN THE VOLUME UP ON THEIR TALENT AND GET HEARD IN UNIQUE AND POWERFUL WAYS. SO IN THE CASE OF THE SARAH VAUGHN VOCAL COMPETITION, MY EXPERIENCE WAS A CATALYST FOR CREATIVITY. I TOOK WHAT I KNEW AND DEVELOPED A CHANGE-MAKING OPPORTUNITY FOR OTHERS. GEORGE WEAN AND I STAYED TOGETHER FOR 20 YEARS. HE WAS MY MENTOR. I GOT TO PRODUCE HUNDREDS OF JAZZ FESTIVALS ALL OVER THE WORLD. I LOVE AND I STILL LOVE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN ARTIST AND A LIVE AUDIENCE CONNECT. WE DO IT HUNDREDS OF NIGHTS A YEAR HERE, AND IT’S A THRILL EVERY TIME. BUT WHEN I TURNED 40, I REALIZED I NEEDED TO CHANGE. I NEEDED TO TAKE WHAT I LEARNED AND GET CREATIVE. SO I RESIGNED AS PRESIDENT OF FESTIVAL PRODUCTIONS, GAVE GEORGE BACK MY EQUITY STAKE IN THE BUSINESS, AND RENTED A ONE-ROOM OFFICE ON SIXTH AVENUE IN NEW YORK. I STARTED OVER. THAT WAS CRAZY. RIGHT? [LAUGHTER] WELL, SORT OF. I DIDN’T MAKE MUCH MONEY, BUT I DID GET TO TAKE WHAT I’D LEARNED AND REINVENT MYSELF AS A SOCIALLY MINDED PRODUCER. I LOVE MAKING FESTIVALS, SO I KEPT AT IT, ONLY I EXPANDED THE PALETTE IN ORDER TO GIVE BACK. AS MY WORK CHANGED, I CHANGED TOO. I PRODUCED BLUES FESTIVALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND PARTNERED WITH THE MUSICIANS TO ILLUMINATE THE ISSUE OF HOMELESSNESS IN AMERICA. EACH FESTIVAL COLLABORATED WITH A HOMELESSNESS ORGANIZATION IN THE CITY IT WAS STAGED IN, A PERCENTAGE OF EVERY TICKET SOLD WENT TO THE NONPROFIT, AND THE BLUES ARTISTS GAVE FREE PERFORMANCES AT LOCAL HOMELESS SHELTERS. I PRODUCED A SERIES OF WOMEN IN COMEDY FESTIVALS WHERE WE WORKED WITH THE BRAVE AND STRONG FEMALE COMICS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT SEXUAL VIOLENCE. THE COMICS PERFORMED AT BATTERED WOMEN’S SHELTERS AND WE PROVIDED INFORMATION AND EVENTS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE ISSUE. I CREATED A SERIES OF GRAMMY FESTIVALS WITH THE RECORDING ACADEMY AND EPIHADED DEVELOP — HELPED DEVELOP GRAMMY IN THE SCHOOL, A PROGRAM WHERE THE KIDS GOT A SENSE OF DOZENS OF CAREERS IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS THAT EXIST BEYOND BEING CENTER STAGE WITH A MIC. I’D LOVED BROADWAY MUSICALS EVER SINCE I WAS A KID. AS A STUDENT OF HISTORY, I READ A LOT ABOUT THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE. SO MY FIRST BROADWAY MUSICAL WAS ACTUALLY PRODUCED OFF-BROADWAY AT THE APOLLO THEATER. THE BRILLIANT WRITER AND DIRECTOR GEORGE WOLFE AND I PRODUCED A SHOW I CALLED “HARLEM SONG.” IT CELEBRATED THE CULTURAL AND POLITICAL LEGACY OF HARLEM WITH SONG AND DANCE AND VIDEO TESTIMONY FROM HARLEM RESIDENTS. WE WROTE A CURRICULUM THAT WENT WITH THE SHOW. AND THOUSANDS OF NEW YORK CITY SCHOOL CHILDREN LEARNED SOME HISTORY WHILE GETTING THEIR FIRST TASTE OF THE MAGIC OF MUSICAL THEATER. THESE PROGRAMS ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF HOW ONE CAN COMBINE A PROFESSION, REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE, CURIOSITY, CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION AND A DESIRE TO, IN SOME SMALL WAY, TRY TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. AND YOU MAY SAY, SCHREIBER, IT’S GREAT YOU PRODUCED ALL THAT STUFF, BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO ME?! I’M AN AUDIOLOGIST! [CHEERS] WHERE ARE THE AUDIOLOGISTS, BY THE WAY? RIGHT IN THE FRONT ROW. [CHEERS] IT’S GREAT. EXACTLY WHERE YOU — LETTER “A.” RIGHT? IS THAT HOW IT WORKS? [LAUGHTER] GREAT TO SEE YOU. ALL RIGHT. SO YOU’RE AN AUDIOLOGIST. HERE’S WHAT IT COULD MEAN. YOU’RE AN AUDIOLOGIST AND YOU INVENT AN AMAZING NEW HEARING AID. WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT? YOU INVENT A GENERIC VERSION THAT CAN BE DISTRIBUTED AT NOMINAL COST TO POOR, OLDER ADULTS ALL OVER THE WORLD. YOU’RE A PUBLIC RELATIONS PROFESSIONAL. ANY OF THOSE? [CHEERS] THERE YOU ARE. YOU’RE A FEW, BUT YOU’RE MIGHTY. RIGHT? SO AFTER MAKING IT BIG, AS KANYE’S PUBLICIST AND BOY DOES HE NEED ONE — [LAUGHTER] — YOU GO DOWN A PATH NOT TAKEN AND ONLY ACCEPT CLIENTS WHOSE WORK ADVANCES SOCIAL JUSTICE FOR THE LEAST MONEY. YOU HOLD A DEGREE IN SPORTS ADMINISTRATION. NOBODY, HUH? AND AFTER RISING UP IN THE RANKS OF THE YANKEES ORGANIZATION, YOU USE YOUR STATUS TO FUND NO COST BASEBALL CLINICS AND STUDENT-ATHLETE MENTORING IN INNER CITIES ALL OVER AMERICA. YOU LAWYERS WHO SPECIALIZE IN CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND PEACE STUDIES — [CHEERS] [LAUGHTER] THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING SUCH A SPECIFIC FOCUS. [LAUGHTER] I AM COUNTING ON YOU ON MAKING PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. TRUST ME! JARED KUSHNER COULD SURE USE YOUR HELP. [LAUGHTER] MAYBE YOU’RE IN BUSINESS. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO JOIN THE BOARD OF NJPAC AND USE YOUR ACUMEN TO USE YOUR INPRESENCE TO BECOME A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS. I COULD SURE USE YOUR HELP. AN ACCOUNTANT? [CHEERS] AN ACCOUNTANT. DEDICATE YOUR PRACTICE TO HELPING ALL OF US CREATIVE TYPES IN THE HOUSE BE MORE FINANCIALLY LITERATE. MAINTAIN OUR 501(c)(3) STATUS AND ALLOW US TO MAKE OUR ART WITH LESS STRESS. DO YOU HAVE A MASTER’S IN FRENCH? WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE MASTER’S IN FRENCH? NO. [LAUGHTER] IF YOU DO, IDENTIFY AN IMMIGRANT RIGHTS NGO AND ASSIST HAITIAN REFUGEES TO INTEGRATE INTO AMERICAN SOCIETY. AND WHAT ABOUT THE TEACHERS WHO ALREADY ARE DOING — [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER] LOT OF THEM. — ALREADY DOING INCREDIBLE WORK. GO ABOVE AND BEYOND AND DEVELOP INNOVATIVE WAYS TO MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF YOUR STUDENTS. ALL YOU MARINE BIOLOGISTS OUT THERE, SAVE — [LAUGHTER] — SAVE THOSE TURTLES! [LAUGHTER] YOU’RE A PSYCHOLOGIST? [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] YOU GUYS — YOU’RE WAY TOO HAPPY TO BE PSYCHOLOGISTS. MY GOODNESS. [LAUGHTER] I WISH YOU WERE MY PSYCHOLOGIST. [LAUGHTER] SO YOU’RE A PSYCHOLOGIST. YOU HAVE A THRIVING PRIVATE PRACTICE. MAKE YOUR SERVICES AVAILABLE TO ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED TEENAGERS SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY. SO, I’M JUST MAKING THIS UP. [LAUGHTER] I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR ADVANCED DEGREES, BUT I DO KNOW THAT YOU WILL HAVE ENDLESS CHANCES THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER TO EXPAND THE IMPACT AND THE USEFULNESS OF YOUR PROFESSION. DO THIS BY ALWAYS BEING CURIOUS, COLLABORATIVE, INCLUSIVE, UNACCEPTING OF THE WAY THINGS ARE, BE FEARLESS, BE ENERGETIC. BELIEVE ME. THE WORLD IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE ITSELF. YOU ARE HIGHLY EDUCATED. AND HAVE PROSPECTS. YOU MAY THINK OF YOUR DEGREE AS YOUR CHANCE TO PRACTICE A PROFESSION AND ASSURE YOUR FUTURE. IT IS ALSO YOUR CHANCE TO SAVE THE WORLD. ALL YOU SMART PEOPLE, GO FOR IT. GOD BLESS YOU. THANK YOU. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] >>THANK YOU, DR. SCHREIBER. [LAUGHTER] AND THAT’S THE LAST TIME I CALL YOU THAT. [LAUGHTER] TRULY, WITH THE MANY HUNDREDS GRADUATING TODAY, YOU NOW BECOME AN HONORARY ALUMNUS OF MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY, AND WE ARE ACTUALLY VERY PROUD TO CALL YOU ONE OF OUR OWN.
