The rankings are an indicator of the
kinds of opportunities that we can provide. We have such an amazingly
talented group of faculty who bring their intellectual capabilities into the
classroom to really help students learn how to address real-world problems in an
applied setting, so that those students can go out with a real sense of purpose,
real sense of community commitment, a real sense of public solutions to
community problems. Because it’s not just how you solve these problems, such as
using managerial techniques, but also what are those problems exactly. What are
the options that we have available to us? What are the best options? The most
realistic options and the most effective options for solving the problems that
we’ve identified in our community. We have all these different partners that
we bring to bear on these solutions as well as this amazingly talented faculty,
who help identify what the problems are and what are the solutions that we can
then turn around to our practitioner partners and say, “Hey, here’s a really
good solution. Here’s how you could actually implement this solution to
solve this problem.” If you have a really strong commitment to public service and
you really want to do good works, this is an amazing array of different kinds of
career paths under the broad umbrella of urban government, of local government in
the United States, because that’s where most governments are. You know, there’s
one federal government, there’s 50 state governments, but there’s 90,000 local
governments in the United States and they need quality professionally trained
people to work for them on behalf of the public and the taxpayers in the United
States, so we encourage students to, you know, look at these kinds of programs
that are out there. We think we have a really good product and we would
certainly encourage them to give us a good look.
