That high school isn't the only one that students have to deal with type of things everyday. At least she has the courage to say something and not be like most and just let it slide. But good they deserved it. She tried to resolve these issues privately by speaking directly to school Staff but no one listened to her, So if she had to publicly humiliate these morons SO BE IT! It got everybody’s Attention right ? 😉😁 Reply Ronald Raygun says: June 16, 2019 at 11:28 pm To fend for yourself is an important lesson to learn for this borderline girl. Counselor did a good job. Reply Marcos Gutierrez says: June 16, 2019 at 11:37 pm Well maybe that counselor had like 800 bad ass students he had to look after and the front office staff had to deal with shit you don’t even realize and are getting paid crap wages. I get the rage and criticism at the school and system…just seems off that she’s singling out these individuals and we’re automatically blaming them when we don’t know the whole story. Even the drunk teacher..yea that’s crazy, but he’s obviously going through something and got fired. Why you gotta humiliate him even further? Reply Caleb Pelethite says: June 17, 2019 at 12:33 am This story is infuriating… Not because of her allegations, but because it represents everything wrong with modern society. We’ve decided to take the word of a 17-year-old simply because she is valedictorian. The news outlets who have picked up this story haven’t done even a modicum of research to validate her claims. So you know what? I did… Nataly Buhr voiced three primary complaints in her speech. With her teacher who reportedly had alcoholism, with her school counselor, and with the front office staff. So again, I elected to look into these claims. Concerning the teacher, due to the saturation of this speech I couldn’t find any articles regarding the teacher being escorted from school by the police. However, I would assume that the overwhelming loud cheer from students lends some credence to this having happened. Concerning the front office staff, she alleges that they failed to notify her about a scholarship until the day before it was due for submission. However, a simple three minute perusal of the SYHS website – http://syh.sweetwaterschools.org/counseling-center/ – displays a link for scholarships to the right. On there is an enormous google drive filled with electronic bulletins for scholarships including their application information complete with deadlines. There is also a scholarship wall in the school. Surely some onus should be placed on her for failing to actually look in the Google Drive or at the physical wall in the school. With regards to her complaint about a Work Permit I cannot find anything on the website about it, so I cannot corroborate or disprove her claims there. Now, as it concerns the counselor and “not being available” as well as “having nothing to do with her success,” this is where things are personal for me as a fellow school counselor. Because counselor-student confidentiality is a requirement, this counselor will not be able to say how many times she met with Nataly. However, San Ysidro has roughly 2,500 students and 7 traditional counselors according to readily available data and looking at their website. That would mean the student-to-counselor ratio is 350-to-1 which is about 100 more than the recommended ratio according to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). 75% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged being on Free or Reduced Lunch. The high school is incredibly close to the border and has a lot of Migrant Learners and 42% are English Language Learners. All of this means San Ysidro is a Title 1 school. Counselors in Title 1 schools well over the ASCA recommended ratios are doing things every day that aren’t seen by other students. Things like counseling suicidal students, counseling homicidal students to keep the school safe, addressing bullying/harassment issues, working with social services to help these poor students and/or families, working with migrant education laws, etc. Many of these things can/will supersede a parent/student meeting about college. But beyond that, for any student to be valedictorian they need the schedule to do so which means the counselor made a concerted effort to ensure Nataly could get all those AP courses into her schedule over the course of 4 years. But the part that concerns me most is that Nataly Buhr seems so in her own world of entitlement/privilege – while being surrounded by those in a Title 1 school – that she ignores that her counselor was going through something absolutely terrible this past year. 11 months ago her counselors 17-year-old daughter was struck and killed in a hit-and-run while jogging just one month after graduating high school (https://www.thestarnews.com/coach-pleads-guilty-in-death-of-high-school-grad/). So while helping these students she was dealing with something that no one ever should have do and yet Nataly Buhr doesn’t seem to give a damn. Nope, Nataly got her 15 minutes of fame and nobody seemed to bother to do any the tiniest bit of research into her claims because that’s how we are as a society. So to those saying the American Education System sucks… You’re right. Because apparently those research and fact checking skills they try to impart on you while in school immediately go away after high school… Reply Anicodeaufo 59 says: June 17, 2019 at 12:54 am Miserable little bitch. I had a similar situation happen to me my senior years three days before my graduation. I, as all my fellow senior class members had to get a paper signed by; principal, assistant principal and counsler stating that I had completed all of my required credits in order to graduate. Of which I also had to sign with I believe my parents signature to return back to the counseling center. Well three days before graduation I had been called into the counseling center where I was told by ANOTHER counselor THAT WAS NOT MY OWN that I was ineligible to graduate because I missed credits for a biology class. Furious beyond belief I remember calling my parents and giving them the news. Well to make a long story short I spent the last three days before graduation to complete a years worth of work, notes and tests to successfully say my eligibility for graduation was changed to walk for the ceremony. I spent the last three days of my high school senior year with little sleep to make up for the time that my counselor neglected to do his job and inform me that I was missing credits for graduation. Adding insult to injury for my senior year I had an open period my senior year all year where I was FULLY CAPABLE OF TAKING THE BIOLOGY CLASS ON TOP OF A SPARE ELECTIVE WHERE I COULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE THE CLASS THE "NORMAL" WAY. Let it be known that this is not a single occurance that happens "once in a blue moon" as I am proof that it happens way more than one might think! Believe me if one of my kids get this chance, it will be more than this. May be just may be high schools might wake up and do their job, especially the so called “counselors” give me a break. They are just get paid for doing basically NOTHING or discourage young kids. I am sure she spoke for thousands of students and their family. Big thanks for this young lady. Her high school administration take this as stepping stool and improve rather than hiding or trying to justify it. She used you as stepping stool and achieved her goal regardless. If you are wise, take this as a positive criticism and change. Remember you will have many more graduates student and you don’t want to hear this every year. Reply Cheshired Grin says: June 19, 2019 at 10:42 pm Little does the student know, the teacher could have lost his wife and kids 15 years ago in a car accident and has slowly fallen into depression and alcoholism over many years. Trying to move on but can't, and to add icing to the cake, he is being called out in front of his whole faculty and a bunch of students who have never really experienced real loss in their life. But sure, lets pretend to know everything. You’re an educator and our future is in the hands of the next generations to come, these kids today need to be taught to stand for what they believe is injustice and hopefully one day we all can coexist without any prejudice. I hope that what Natalie brought to light will impact the future generation to try and make a difference if not in their life hopefully in the lives of others. Way to go Natalie and class of 2019! My daughter graduated with an Associate of Arts & Science Degree (AAS-2 year junior college) out of state before EVEN graduating from high school. She applied & was accepted to SD State University. Her dream/focus was to become a doctor. Her advisor stated that it was a pipe dream & find an alternative. My daughter applied to medical school during that year (her junior year). Not only was she accepted after only completing 3 years of college, she was the youngest student to ever have been accepted. She is now a doctor who went on to become a specialist before she turned 30. Shame on these counselors/advisors/educators who are suppose to encourage dreams not destroy them. Reply Moondog says: September 13, 2019 at 5:33 am My high school would hold a vote for valedictorian every year instead of giving the title to whatever student had the highest grade point average. I wonder if it's because the school wanted to prevent an occurrence like this from happening? I like what this gal did, but I wonder how her high school classmates would treat her afterwards. She'd probably bump into a few at whatever college she decided to attend, or on the street. I had a personality similar to hers and many of my high school classmates would groan everytime they saw me in the hallway at university. I went to a university in the same city as my high school.
