[Georgia McCarthy] Well it covers quite a
lot of stuff we do a bit of psychology and sociology at the beginning [Matthew Butt] We do a lot of sort of maths to start with you have to understand the engineering
side of it . [Joshua Monahan] I’ve learnt all the key skills
I need for design such as Solid Works, visual visualisation, Photoshop been able to learn new skills with
my hands because it’s important to know how to make things. [Georgia McCarthy] I’ve really enjoyed it,
you’re constantly working like 24/7, it’s been tiring but good fun, like, you’re not
bored at all. [Matthew Butt] The facilities are great, we’ve
got workshops that we can use. We can get into our computer labs twenty four seven. [Georgia McCarthy] Placement year was a massive
development in my in my ability so I did like an engineering placement in France. [Matthew Butt] On my placement I worked for
a company called Brother Max who specialise in children and baby products so I worked
with packaging design, I did some bits on that, I did some actual product design and
some of the things that I’ve helped to design are coming out sort of now so not only was
it good for me to learn actual skills but I’ve got an idea of what business requires
and what I need to do now to sort of get a job and what that job is going to be requiring
of me. [Joshua Monahan] There’s no point designing
something if it doesn’t work and what Bournemouth University specifically does unlike a lot
of other courses around the country is practice that manual side of it to make sure we’re
doing realistic designs because as I say, people go out to industry not knowing how
things go into a mould whereas we go to the workshop and make sure that the vacuum form
mould that we make works. [Georgia McCarthy] If you like hands on stuff,
if you’re not as academic as maybe some others and you do like design in general, give it
a go. [Matthew Butt] I’d say go for it. There’s
no reason not to try. At the end of the day it’s product design so everything’s a product
you can as long as you can sell it and you can give a story behind it then it’s worth
a go
