Principal Stitt Says Yes to School Breakfast

[ MUSIC ]>>HI, I’M DOCTOR WILLIAM STITT, PRINCIPAL OF BASELINE MIDDLE SCHOOL, SOUTH HAVEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. AND I’D LIKE TO SHARE MY THOUGHTS ABOUT OFFERING SCHOOL BREAKFAST. STUDENTS NEED ADEQUATE FOOD TO FUEL LEARNING. WE’VE ALL HEARD ABOUT THE LINK BETWEEN PROPER NUTRITION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. BUT, UNFORTUNATELY, MANY STUDENTS AREN’T EATING BREAKFAST AT HOME, OR AT SCHOOL. THEY’RE SITTING IN OUR CLASSROOMS WITH GROWLING STOMACHS, LOW ENERGY, AND POOR CONCENTRATION. THE BOTTOM LINE IS, THAT STUDENT NUTRITION NEEDS MUST BE MET BEFORE WE CAN TALK ABOUT ANYTHING TO DO WITH EDUCATION. IF STUDENTS ARE HUNGRY, THEY’RE NOT THINKING ABOUT CLASSWORK. THEY’RE THINKING ABOUT “HOW LONG UNTIL LUNCHTIME?” BECAUSE IT MAY BE THE ONLY MEAL THEY’LL GET THAT DAY. OFFERING SCHOOL BREAKFASTS IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. IT ENSURES THAT STUDENTS ARE EATING NUTRITIOUS FOODS, AND GETTING THE NUTRIENTS THEY NEED FOR BRAINPOWER AND OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL BEING. TO FIND THE BREAKFAST PROGRAM THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOUR SCHOOL, TRY DIFFERENT AVENUES AND APPROACHES. DON’T SAY NO TO SCHOOL BREAKFASTS, BEFORE GIVING IT YOUR BEST SHOT.
