Parkgate Road Campus, University of Chester

This is Parkgate Road Campus, the original
campus of the University of Chester. Much like the city of Chester, Parkgate Road Campus
celebrates its heritage and embraces innovation. I’m a graduate of the University of Chester
and I’ve come back to find out how the University made the student experience even better. Home
to a range of academic, residential and leisure facilities, as well as a dedicated careers
and employability service, Parkgate Road Campus offers the ideal setting for students looking
to live and study in a vibrant self-contained student community, in the heart of an iconic
city. We’re here in the heart of the Parkgate Road Campus at this stunning 1st year accommodation
block, I mean this wasn’t here when I was here and the building just looks incredible.
What sort of things can students expect when living here? Well it depends on the board
type that students move in to. We’ve got these ones here, which are studio style living,
so the second you go into that room you’ve got your own kitchen, they’ve got a queen
size bed, large ensuite bathroom and study space in there. We’ve also got share living,
communal kind of spaces, so a kitchen shared between 3-6 students, with shared bathrooms
as well, right the way through to things like full board, where we’re providing 3 meals
a day, 7 days a week. And what sort of investment has the university made to accommodation here
at Parkgate Road? Well our Vice-Chancellor’s actually invested not just in accommodation,
but in all the facilities across the campus, to make sure the whole student experience
is catered for. So I went to see the Vice-Chancellor to find out a bit more about how the University
of Chester has been further enhancing student life. I’m very proud of what we’ve done on
the Parkgate Road Campus in the last 10 years, we’ve spent about £100m. We offer a number
of disciplines through a variety of faculties. You name it, we’ve made provision for students
to have the very best facilities to support their academic studies, and we’ve also put
a lot into the student experience, particularly an emphasis on careers and employability,
enabling students when they graduate to get a fulfilling and well paid job. The University
of Chester has over 100 clubs and societies for you to get involved in, from football
to cheerleading, rowing to Quidditch and you can access them all here, at the £2m Students’ Union centre. The Students’ Union does have a lot of their own facilities, they’ve got their
own convenience store, Starbucks, they’ve got their very own bar, CH1, which hosts regular
themed nights throughout the year, and it’s all ideally located right next to some of
our most popular accommodation on the site. Chester Students’ Union really does have everything
students need to stay entertained during their time with us. The Students’ Union is also
a great place for our students to come and get some more generic advice, but in addition
to that, we do have a 5 star rated student support service here on the Parkgate Road Campus,
with a fully staffed team of practitioners. Moving to university can be quite a daunting
prospect for our students, so it’s only normal that you’re probably going to need some help
along the way. So our student support services are on hand, whether it’s to help with disability
support, budgeting, or whether it’s just to deal with a bit of homesickness, their door
is always open. So Jack, tell me a little bit about how the University supports sport,
health and fitness here at the Parkgate Road Campus. Well, over recent years we have made
quite a lot of investment in our sports facilities, so whether you’re part of one of our sports
teams or just generally want to stay in shape here at the university we have got enough
facilities around the campus to keep you covered. We’re also really proud of our sporting achievements
here at the University of Chester, so we do offer sports scholarships and support packages
to those students that really want to push their sport forward. We’ve also got a large
sports hall, indoor gymnasiums and we’ve got the fitness centre as well, where our students can take
part in personal training sessions and also take part in all of the classes that we have
to offer as well. Can I stop now? Not yet, mate! So, if you want to see for yourselves
what the Parkgate Road Campus has to offer, why not book on to one of the campus tours?
