(like taking their classes in English) I know places like Jyochi and Waseda offer programs like that but I'm still confused on what exactly that offers Reply サマータイム Summertime says: April 9, 2017 at 6:51 pm Sharla, You have a ton of helpful insight!! Thank you so much! I'm still a high school student, but I'm looking forward to studying abroad in Osaka this summer with a language immersion program. I hope that when I am a college student to also study abroad in Japan. Again, thank you for putting your experiences here on Youtube. I appreciate it. 日本語の勉強を頑張りますね。 Reply Michelle says: April 9, 2017 at 7:23 pm Sharla I love you hair ! ♥️♥️♥️ Reply thatonekid says: April 9, 2017 at 7:29 pm GREGGG U GUYS SHOULD GO TO MCDONALDS AHAHAH YESSS Reply HalloIchBinDieGabi says: April 9, 2017 at 8:33 pm so many memories Reply Ava mojo says: April 9, 2017 at 10:35 pm where did They go to uni? I`m thinking about going to Temple University in Japan when I finish school (Next year) and watching this video is really helpful! Reply PolarNight13 says: April 10, 2017 at 8:42 pm I did a year at Waseda (taught in English) and it was very lenient! Students would straight up sleep in class right in front of the teacher, and we hardly had any work to do between classes. My university in the UK gives me 100+ pages to read per week for each class, Waseda maybe gave me 20 per class and tbh you didn't need to do the reading to get good grades. I was really surprised! This was a really great video though, made me feel so nostalgic, my time studying in Japan was amazing and I wish I could go back 💕😭 Reply Jennifer witt says: April 10, 2017 at 11:55 pm I want to after I graduate high school move to Japan and attend a university there and I've been learning Japanese but I still have a lot of time left so I just wanted to know if it was hard to attend a university in Japan Reply Raspberrize says: April 11, 2017 at 2:00 am Greg seems like such a sweet person. Hope we get to see him more! 🙂 Reply Camille T says: April 11, 2017 at 6:39 am I'm at Keio (graduate level), and have access to some undergrad classes and Japanese teachers were quitelenient compared to Canada (where I got my B.Sc.) and France (where I did the 1st half of my Masters), not to mention the fact that grad students in both countries don't usually have access to undergrad classes. Oh, and there are more and more programs opening up for foreigners with classes being taught in English (my program is entirely in English). Reply SaberSongs says: April 11, 2017 at 8:27 am Haha, the slightly emotional and nostalgic music during the flashbackI love it 🙂 Reply mihosinzan says: April 11, 2017 at 11:23 am グレッグ君、なつかしい！まだ日本に住んでる？旅行で来たの？ Reply Kawtar Khayati says: April 11, 2017 at 11:34 am i want to study there too Reply Vishwakat says: April 11, 2017 at 11:38 am Aren't there decent programs that are taught in English? Like in Waseda, Sophia, UoT etc. Reply Vishwakat says: April 11, 2017 at 11:46 am How's the employment scene for foreign students graduating in Japan? Reply IchigoNoShoujo says: April 11, 2017 at 12:01 pm Great video ♡ I love hearing the experiences of other exchange students! I've studied at Kobe University for six months. 🙂 If it's okay I'll answer some of the questions as well for people to hear another opinion. I think it would be cool if others did the same thing too! 1. Language barrier – I also spoke a decent amount of Japanese when I arrived so I was okay too. Kobe University does not offer a lot of English classes for all faculties though. I studied at the Faculty for Intercultural Studies and still there were barely any classes in English, so I was forced to speak Japanese as well. Which was a good thing! 😉2. Difficulty of classes – I'm from Europe, so I can only compare to the standard here. The Japanese language classes were a lot of work compared to my classes at home (I'm not a Japanese major though so my classes at home are not very strict). Other than that I had the same experience as you guys: people coming late, not showing up at all, sleeping in class. It depends on the teacher though – I had one American teacher who was very strict about all those things, so in her class the standard was pretty high.3. University food – It was delicious! KU offers lots of different dishes in different cafeterias… they also had buffets for salads, meat and veggies, next to ramen/soba/udon stations, curry, all kinds of dons… I once asked a Japanese student how he thought the food tastes and he said "it's average", but to the Gaijin me it tasted amazing. 😉 It was very cheap too. I'd say a average lunch cost me about 400 Yen or so. 4. Being a foreigner – I didn't feel weird at university. Everyone was really friendly and interested in meeting foreigners. My faculty had a special room where foreign students and Japanese students could hang out together, and I spent most of my breaks there. 🙂 Outside of university I was very much aware of the fact that I'm a foreigner. There weren't that many western foreigners in Kobe, so it seems like people weren't used to our appearance. I felt stared at a lot and people were shy talking to me.5. Special treatment – I only took one class that was actually for Japanese students and not for foreigners. It was in Japanese but used a English textbook. While the language spoken in class was Japanese, I was allowed to write my essays and the final paper in English. 🙂6. Professors – The professors I had for Japanese classes were all amazing. I had a different professor for each day of the week, and every one of them was strict but fun in their own way, so it ended up being a really good balance. I loved going to those classes. Some professors of my other classes were the typical "lecture" kind, but I'd say all of them were very friendly and nice to foreign students. Reply Caelan De Jager says: April 11, 2017 at 2:15 pm What University did you guys go to?? Reply pnkt 1805 says: April 11, 2017 at 2:19 pm I was in one of national uni in Osaka for a year as an exchange student. I don't know if it was just me or what, but the Japanese students in my uni were kinda indifferent to us foreign students and being so cold, should I say. ofc not all of them behaved like that. i remember hanging out with the other foreign students and Japanese I know from my parttime job and people I met at izakaya a lot rather than the Japanese students from my uni Reply Vizteca Jessie says: April 11, 2017 at 7:08 pm @SharlaInJapan I was wondering what the age range of students at university are in Japan? Here in N. America there are students range from 18-55 years old, sometimes even older. I was also wondering, do you know anyone who finished their bachelor's then study abroad to Japan for a Master's or Language school? Or do students who finished their bachelor's then move straight to careers in Japan? Thank you! Reply MidniteZer0 says: April 11, 2017 at 7:39 pm Really intrigued to hear more about tutoring in Japan! Really fun video to watch 😀 Reply nooranorde says: April 11, 2017 at 7:56 pm You can actually get the work permit with your student visa when you arrive to the country: you just ask for it when they make your zairyu card at the airport. I asked for the permit when I went for my exchange to Kyoto in 2015 and I got it straight away. Although I ended up not working at all while there it was still good to have in case I would have wanted to work. Reply Lowi Desu says: April 11, 2017 at 7:57 pm Ahhh can we take a moment to appreciate your amazing sweater!? 😍 love your hair too! Reply Brooke says: April 12, 2017 at 4:19 pm I went to college in Alberta and I honestly rarely went to class and passed with at least 70s lol. I am now going to an online university so I obviously don't gotta go to class but I'm still passing even if I procrastinate a lot lol. I'm sure if I went to a normal university it would be different but there are ways around the difficulty of university here haha. Reply Cheyenne Shrader says: April 12, 2017 at 5:41 pm I want to get my Masters in Japan. Do you know anything about masters programs? Reply Lennie Meadows says: April 12, 2017 at 6:44 pm Hey so I'm homeschooled and live in North America and I love Japan. I'm taking classes to learn Japanese but, I'm terrified to go to collage because I've never been to public school. Everyone I know says "oh you're so smart you could go to collage and be a translator no problem" but I doubt my ability a lot. I have one more year of high school left, is there any tips that you would have for me? Please and thanks 🙂 Reply hereruha says: April 12, 2017 at 8:16 pm spotted the t-shirt from the GazettE's world tour on Greg, haha. Reply たなかなつめ says: April 13, 2017 at 2:09 pm Subs done! I'm doing Japanese studies now in a Japanese University and I would like to know if you used an English-Japanese electronic dictionary when you were studying? I want to get one but I'm not sure which brand/mode I should go for. Thanks in advance! 🙂 Reply Nicolle Nishi says: April 15, 2017 at 3:13 am What was the university you guys went? Reply maribjor says: April 17, 2017 at 5:24 pm This video was so helpful! (Love all your videos OC) I have decided (almost) that I want to take an undergraduate degree in Japan, English-track since I don't know enough Japanese. I'm excited, but I’m also scared that I won’t "fit" in because I'm a foreigner, and I will also be older than anyone else since I already have been studying for 3 years at a university in Norway(bachelor) I really want to do this, but I can’t get that little doubt out of my mind! Were you ever in doubt before you divided to go study I Japan? Or does somebody else have some helpful experiences? Reply CaptainHugs says: April 18, 2017 at 11:15 am yay my question got answered, thank you 😀 ! Reply agi says: April 20, 2017 at 12:04 pm I am currently nominated from my uni to study in Japan for a year. I'm still waiting for the partner unis reply. If I go I'll take Japanese language courses but I'm starting to get more and more worried because my Japanese language proficiency is very low. If I get accepted I might spam your videos with questions…thank you for your videos they help with preparing on what to expect, even if I've been to Japan 3 times already, there definitely is a difference from going as a student and living in Japan… I'm very nervous so far but hope I can help others with my own experiences 🙂 Reply Isabella says: April 20, 2017 at 4:23 pm i'm so confused, what did Sharla actually study at university? Reply Missim You says: May 17, 2017 at 3:19 pm In my university (in Australia) unfortunately only certain degrees can be considered for exchange so I found this quite interesting. Mine can be done overseas but cost would be my biggest issue. So I'll just keep saving as much as I can to travel after I finish next year. Although I've heard rumours that until we pay our uni fees back to the government we aren't allowed to go overseas, or so I've been told. Also unfortunate is our government wants to increase the cost of degrees and pushing them upwards to some being $100,000 instead of the $30,000 for my current degree. 😟 Reply Isabel Olivia says: June 19, 2017 at 12:50 am I love your sweater Sharla!!!! <3 Reply Noir Merde says: June 23, 2017 at 6:58 am Tbh who is her boyfriend help me plz!!!?!??! I am finishing up a PhD in history at a well-known midwestern university in America and was thinking about applying for jobs in Japan. I looked online and found a program from the Japan Society that seems to have a path for that very purpose (https://www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-fellow/postdoctoral.html). In fact, I think the young woman mentioned the Japan Society as one of the entities that gave her a grant to study in the country. I was wondering if you found many foreign teachers during your studies in Japan? Also, how prevalent was English only classes at your school? Finally, the first several years of an assistant professor's life is taken up by learning how to teach and producing enough work to get good incremental reviews and ultimately tenure. I was wondering what your thoughts were on taking that on while also learning Japanese (I would absolutely want to learn Japanese even if I wasn't on the path to a permanent Japanese professorship). Reply Mizusenshi says: August 20, 2017 at 1:38 am Greg seems really nice. I'm out of university now sadly but I'd like to visit Japan at least.
