Dr. Biden Community
Colleges have so much to offer you. They offer mentors; they
offer writing centers; they offer math labs. (laughter) Male Speaker: And
Santa Fe offers a lot of opportunity to get
involved and to succeed. They give you advisors;
they give you clubs; they give you
student ambassadors, student government. So, transferring from here
over to U.F., I’d already built a network here,
so I kind of knew how to navigate into a
new environment. And it was a smooth
transition for me to go — to go from high school to
Santa Fe, and then on to U.F. And now I’m doing
pretty well at U.F. as well — Female Speaker: And for me,
it was like a good stepping stone to get to where I
need to be, and it’s like a family here; we’re all
trying to get to U.F. It’s really cool. I really like it, and
it was a very good decision for me. Dr. Biden: Thank
you for inviting us here today; really,
it’s been a pleasure. Male Speaker: The
Accelerator, as you know, is the focus — focused
on our developmental math and so much more
can happen here. If a student wants to come
in and just work on a paper or meet with a tutor,
they can come here also. It’s open to all ACC
students district wide. Dr. Biden: I teach a lot
of developmental students and a lot of returning
students, and the one stumbling block does seem to
be math, and math anxiety, and, “Can I do it?” And this seems to be so
empowering and so positive, and students can see
immediate success. And so it gives
them the confidence. Female Speaker: Yeah,
it’s totally changed the way I look at math. Female Speaker:
It’s really fun. I’ve never been
a math person. I’m a — I’m a reading and
writing person all the way. It’s completely changed
the way I view it. Now, I’m actually changing
what I want to do to — I want to teach math. Dr. Biden: This will
help retain students and take away the fear. I’m sure your program’s
just going to build, and I hope other community
colleges come and see this, and then adopt it on
their own campuses.
