On The Green with Alan – December 2013

Hello and welcome
to On The Green with Alan! The fall semester is
coming to a close and it has been both exciting
and historic for Gallaudet. We are continuing to
celebrate our 150th anniversary and honoring our past,
present, and future. This fall, we hosted the first
three speakers in our Sesquicentennial
Lecture Series and each event
was a great success. Our next speaker is
Dr. Andrew Manning, an internationally recognized
environmental scientist. He will discuss the relationship between climate change and
greenhouse gases. To see the full list of
150th Anniversary events, go to the address on
the next slide. Gallaudet is proud to host
its first TEDxGallaudet on February 28, 2014. TEDxGallaudet will feature 20 different 15-minute
presentations. TED – Technology,
Entertainment, Design – is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth
Spreading©. In the spirit of ideas
worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local,
self-organized events that bring people together
to share a TED-like experience. You can receive updates
about TEDxGallaudet through the address
on the next slide. Gallaudet University was
recently selected by US News and World Report as the number one
Best Value Schools – Regional Universities North in the 2014 “U.S. News Best
Colleges” ranking. The Best Values Schools
considers two things. First is the university’s
academic quality. Second is the 2012-2013
net cost for a student who receives average
need-based financial aid. Our Financial Aid Office
works directly with students and families to personalize
financial aid packages – which can include scholarships,
financial aid, and work-study. Visit their webpage
for more information: Regional competitions for the
2014 Academic Bowl are underway. The Rochester School for
the Deaf won the Northeast
Regional Academic Bowl. Regional competitions
will also be held in the Midwest, West, Southeast,
and Southwest. The top four teams
from each region are automatically invited to
the National Competition held at Gallaudet
April 5-8, 2014. To stay informed about
the Regional Academic Bowl competitions, go to the
address on the next slide. The Bison football team
had an historic 9-1 season and competed
in their first NCAA Division III play-off tournament. The team received national
media attention from CBS Sports, ESPN, Associated Press,
and the Washington Post. The women’s volleyball
team won their fourth straight North Eastern Athletic
Conference (NEAC) championship in November. The team also competed in their ninth NCAA Division III play-off tournament. Go Bison! One final note… On January 28, 2014, I will give my annual State of
the University address. The entire campus
community is invited to attend. I wish everyone a happy
and safe holiday season. Thank you for watching
On The Green with Alan.
