Nurses Strike Begins This Morning At University Of Chicago Medical Center

NURSES NOT ABLE TO TAKE LUNCH AND MANY TIMES WE’RE NOT ABLE TO TAKE BREAKS AND WE’RE PENALIZED IF WE TAKE SICK TIME. YOU GET BURNED OUT. ONE OF THE STICKING POINTS OF THE INTENDED STRIKES IS STAFFING. NATIONAL NURSES UNITED REPRESENT THE NURSES SAY IN JANUARY 2017, NURSES AT THE MEDICAL CENTER HAVE FILLED OUT MORE THAN 1500 COMPLAINTS DETAILING THE ISSUE. WE HAVE EMERGENCY ROOM DEPARTMENT ISSUES AND DETAILS SIX TO ONE PATIENTS INCLUDING SOMEONE THAT CAN BE AN ICU PATIENT. THE MEDICAL CENTER SHORT ON NURSES AND THEY’RE WORKING IN DEPARTMENTS WITH LITTLE TO NO EXPERIENCE. THE NURSES THAT COME IN ON THE WEEKENDS ARE ON CALL USUALLY. NURSES THAT DO HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THAT FIELD ARE REQUIRED TO BE ON CALL FOR UP TO 24 HOURS A WEEK BUT HOSPITAL REPRESENTATIVES SAY STAFF SG NOT AN ISSUE AT THE MEDICAL CENTER. THEY ARGUE THEIR LEVELS ARE THE BEST IN THE STATE AND CITY AND THAT THE NUMBER OF STAFFING COMPLAINTS FROM NURSE UNION MEMBERS ARE VERY LOW. ULTIMATELY THIS COMES DOWN TO PATIENT CARE AND GETTING HOSPITAL LEADERS TO LISTEN. WE ARE THERE, WE’RE AT THE BEDSIDE AND IN THE PROCEDURE
