What’s up, YouTube. www.BenTeachesEnglishOverseas.com so I’m back today with another video today I’m thinking about
my regrets my regrets from the past things that I would change if I could do
them differently to be honest with you I kind of just do the best out of cam put
my best foot forward give everything 100% and then you know it’s so close to
hell I don’t really worry about it because I feel like it was out of my
control but it is important to think back and try to no kind of brainstorm as
to how you could have maybe done things a little bit differently things would
have turned out differently if you had done something different so today I want
to talk about my biggest regret from ESL okay so I moved overseas well as an
exchange student in high school but then I first moved over in 2001 up until 2015
last year August was consecutively overseas I would come back from time to
time and that was pretty much non-stop so it’s probably not going to be what
you expect me to say most people are probably going to say well you know
maybe you lost time with your family yeah that’s true maybe there was you
know something back home that you really missed or whatever yeah sure but that’s
not my biggest regret so this is something that I really brainstormed
about and I I put some some deep thought into so without further ado my biggest
regret without a doubt number one from my time teaching overseas was that I
listened to people’s negativity at some point in time I
actually let it affect me okay let me tell you a couple examples when you
first go overseas if you’re like me and you know you’re 19 and and you go back
you know you see people from high school that you saw before on this I know what
are you doing now and you know you say well I’m doing this or I’m working you
know in Japan or whatever people are like oh that’s really cool and you feel
good about it you’re like yeah marinum I’m giving this international experience
I’ve got something going on doing stuff that other people aren’t doing and what
I found was over time that each time I would go to a new country it will kind
of rekindle that feeling for me and I would feel happy and I would feel
interested you know because it wasn’t just like I was not to sound cliche or
anything but it wasn’t just like I was you know working or doing a job a
nine-to-five in a cubicle it was like block by block
year by year I was learning a different culture I was learning pieces of a
different language I was eating new foods so it was better than a vacation
because it was like you know I got something really that I could hold on to
for the rest of my life I have great memories from every country that I’ve
been to worked I’ll say there are a couple countries I’ve visited that I got
out pretty quickly because it wasn’t for me but every place has positives and
negatives so what happened to me was when I became I guess about 25 years old
there were certain people that started talking shit and it was usually like
these kind of veiled comments you know like Oh
I guess it’s good to be a teacher you know if you’re a teacher in the US or
wherever you know people don’t respect the profession so I would hear that well
you know I just always thought you could do a lot more than teaching it’s like
what the hell do you do man you work in it you know on an office building and
you hate your life and you get two weeks vacation here shut up you know if I want
to teach that’s great um why are you so interested in my business why are you
trying to make me feel bad so that started people said well woody when are
you going to get a real job you know you can’t just stay overseas forever and
then people started to say things like ah yeah but I mean when you get back to
the u.s. you know you’re going to start at the very ground level because you
know you’re not going to have experience it’s like oh really I’ve worked on six
continents you don’t think that that’s valuable in business or you know on some
kind of endeavor you think that that’s worth worthless wasted time but people
just want to throw out these critiques to make you feel bad okay and I put it
out there in another video before it may have been over the top because I got a
few emails from people like whoa dude but the sad fact is when you go back to
your 10-year high school reunion people don’t want to see you successful I’m
sorry actually I’m not sorry that I’m saying it people want to see you they
want they’re going to be very happy if you are perceived to be doing less than
they are so that they can feel good about themselves oh you know I’ve yeah I
was all worth it hating my life because I’m in a much better position and you
know they don’t to here by your travels they don’t want to hear about you know
cool stuff that you’ve done and maybe you will have friends that will be happy
for you and be interested but more often than not you get this group of people or
a real job what about when you come back what about your 401k
what about blah blah blah you know and now that I’m back living in the u.s.
people are confused as hell I get emails hey do you need me to help
you find a job it’s like no that’s okay thank you though I really appreciate
that oh so what are you doing you know I get
this all the time because people feel like you know if I can help him get a
job starting at the bottom of the bottom rung of the ladder in my organization
then I’ll feel better about myself but yeah that’s I listen to some of these
people and I’ll let it hurt I won’t say hurt my feelings but it did make me feel
bad at some points in time because look you want to be a businessman you can do
it with with English and language training you know if you just want to
make a difference in the lives of others you can do it with teaching overseas if
you want to travel I mean who can say anything bad about this look at this you
can make money you can travel you can visit other countries I mean where what
oh I should be oh that’s the other one I say oh but you’re not contributing into
the Social Security system once once you’re 65 years old you’re really going
to regret that one because you didn’t pay into it so you won’t be able to
collect it okay research Social Security dude that’s all I’m going to say you
know but I listen to some of these people they made me feel bad and it
affected my productivity that was the problem
it’s not that I actually believe them but you know there’s a phrase that I’ve
probably saving videos before but once you begin to doubt yourself the real
world eat you alive I feel that that is my
regret was that I let people put doubt in my heart and I never should have and
now as a person 34 years old looking back you know I’m taught overseas for a
number of years I can tell you you know it can be a very challenging job it can
be a very fun job I do not regret one single second that I spent overseas will
I do it again absolutely if you want to be successful
you have to ask yourself what success means to you now for some people it
means a number in a bank account to some people it means impact in their
community or in communities abroad or whatever but it’s not all about dollars
and cents and climbing this corporate ladder and getting a title and I’m on
Facebook I see people from high school oh I’m lead co-chair vice president
grand master of the universe who gives a shit about your self declared title
everybody always wants to put you in boxes oh you’re a teacher oh I’m a
physician oh I’m a libertarian I’m a vegan okay great awesome but don’t judge
me for this stuff right that’s all I’m saying
don’t let people put any kind of doubt in your heart and if you want to be
successful you can be successful in whatever venture the you choose and
English teaching is no different than any other and if you’re interested in
making a lot of money at it I can definitely help you because I’ve been
there and I’ve done it I can tell you I’ve also taught for 800 bucks a month
and I had a blast and I had the best times of my life but there is a
happy medium and there is an ability to go you know any any different direction
with this so that’s why I regret that I listen to some people who were just
trying to you know make me feel not so good or or doubt whatever I was doing so
again looking back I made the right choice for the time at every given point
okay if you’re watching this video you may be about to embark on a similar
adventure and guys don’t think that I have any idea what the hell I’m doing
with my life I mean every year every year it changes right you got to keep
getting better and progressing and being productive that’s what life is all about
okay when you’re 25 you don’t know what you’re doing and you choose a path and
then you’re 30 and then you’re 35 you know and that’s just life nobody has a
clear-cut answer success you know you’ve probably seen that meme out there now
success is not point A to point B is this curvy road and you got to follow it
and there are potholes there times you fall on your face you got to get up and
keep going and that’s what really you know it’s going to determine if you’re a
successful person or not no matter what your definition of success is so that’s
it for now my biggest regret I hope this helps if you have any comments at all I
look forward to reading them down below thanks as always to everybody tuning in
I’m delighted that this channel has grown so much I appreciate all the
