Michigan Colleges Alliance Michigan colleges alliance is a collective of 14 private higher education institutions in Michigan were spread throughout the state so we wanted to see if we could replicate the faculty student experience using technology on multiple campuses. The goal of this pilot was to see if we could find another format for online learning where you can we can extend the classroom beyond just the space but still maintain that kind of special dynamic that’s the heart of a liberal arts classroom. Google sent us the jam board, the logitech cameras they sent us the google meet hardware kits, the audio and video that we’ve had has been outstanding. It’s completely changed what I’ve always thought of as distance learning. Over the course of the semester, there was this wall that kind of fell away it was as if you were in the same room with them conversationally speaking. The support required for this room last semester was less than our typical classroom. The students were running this by themselves in many of these rooms. At the beginning it was like oh geez I’m not gonna know how to do this I’m gonna mess something up I’m gonna break something but after you do it. You realize oh this is really simple and really easy like the caveman can do it It’s provides insane ease of use, so that literally anybody can come into the room touch two buttons and you’re in your meeting. This technology really transforms distance learning and online learning This allows a school like an elm ecology to really have more robust opportunities for their students by gaining access to different colleges faculty members. We did do a survey of the students who took these classes strongly agree or agree was across the board and I want to see more of the jam board the logitech cameras, the google meets hardware they wanted to see more of this in more of their classes. It feels like you’re in the future I mean it just feels like you’re in a classroom in the future when it’s all on and working like seamlessly. This is very very doable the costs have come down and that have allowed institutions to really see the return on investment for this. Building smart classrooms is something that any institution can do and I think technology like this is really part of the future of higher education. LEARN MORE
