Miami University – Guide to the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

[Hooding Ceremony] Congratulations on earning your Doctoral degree. Being hooded by your major professor is a long
standing tradition. We have some pointers to help make your hooding go smoothly
for both you and your professor. Fold your hood in half, and carry it over your arm. When your name is called, you and your
major professor will approach the platform. Look for marks on the floor indicating
where you and your adviser should stand. Hand your hood to the Associate Dean. Turn to face the audience. Bend at the knees, so your professor can
get the hood over your head without knocking off your cap. Then turn and thank your professor. The Provost will present your diploma
and congratulate you. Shake hands with the president, and exit
the platform The ceremony will move quickly, but do
not rush. And be sure to enjoy the moment. After you are hooded, and before your
family takes a gazillion pictures, you’ll want to adjust your hood so that it fits
properly. First, attach the string to the button on the inside of your robe. If your robe does not have a button, you can attach the string to a shirt button or to a safety pin on the inside of your robe. Have a friend or family member secure
the string on the hood. Turn out the red and white lining to
show off Miami’s colors.
