Melvin Caballero, The American Dreamer | Bridgewater State University
Going to school was something that we wasn’t encouraged to do. In me there was this thing that was waking up like telling me “if you go to school you can succeed”. And when I saw my mom and dad and I said “mommy I’m leaving” That broke my heart. I started crying. My body was leaving in the house but my heart was staying behind. Being piled like we were as if we were like coffee sack one on top of the other It’s like as if you were dying little by little. I tried to scream but nobody would hear me. I started feeling like the currents of the river like pulling me down. It makes it difficult for me to talk about. I felt that I was a human being being abused. I wished at one point that I asked God to like just kill me like to just die. The police officer came and he punched me right in the face. I was covering blood and I started crying because I needed that opportunity. *Family conversation* Basically we’re blood now. That’s how I see it. And I guess out of all these universities Bridgewater was the only one. The only place that knew or had an opportunity for me When I came here I felt I felt welcome, I felt at home Melvin Caballero is an awesome example of undergraduate research because what we hope for in these kinds of opportunities in providing funding for students to do research is that they can deepen the experience of being a student and create something that changes world for the better. We all now have Melvin’s story. I wanted to become a citizen of the United States. I wanted to feel the pride that I made it. Melvin Caballero *Clapping and cheering* Napoleon: Seeing him where he is right now is like I’m proud.
Cesar: Yeah I’m proud too. So this entire journey has taught me to see the person within me and to see the person, a strong personality, a person that fights for what he wants, a person that doesn’t give up easily, a person that can achieve great things, a person that can do more than what I have already done. And this has taught me to see my past like my background where I come from It has taught me to see the future with the things that I I have been able to achieve, has taught me to see the greatness that I can still achieve.
