Meet Yahaya from Nigeria – an international student at Kingston University

My name is Yahaya I’m from Nigeria and I’m
studying Information Systems with Management Studies at Kingston University. I chose Kingston University because I was
particularly impressed with the course contents. You know, studying in the UK is always a good
thing. UK is known for a high standard of education;
the curriculum is very strong; quality teaching standards; everything is, you know, very nice,
so I made my choice. I must say it, it’s a great experience. It has changed the way I used to study before,
you know, I made all new set of friends, you know, the staff, the environment, everything
is so interesting. I have wide range of facilities, you know,
at my disposal; I can always do what I have to do. Our LRC, Library Resource Centre, we have
an entire section for computing; books, you know, journals, on-line; also we have access
to so many electronic books for students access, so generally, you know, facilities, everything
you need is ready for you. I think studying in the UK is quite different;
to me I would say it’s tough, but at the end of the day you know, you get to adapt
to the new system and people here are very hard-working so if you’re not hard-working
then I think you should, you know, reconsider because here you have to really work hard. During the induction week, we had this session
especially for English language development programme and I got attracted because it has,
hmm, development skills in reports, essays, and I felt like okay, why not, and you know,
it was a great experience for me because it really developed my report writing skills
and I’m so proud of it. The facilitator, you know, she was so kind
in explaining everything we asked her, you know, we had several class assignments, you
know sort of class work where she tests our understanding and generally we developed great
skills, so I write good reports now. You know my application, I applied late, okay,
so I didn’t get halls of residence, but accommodation services were kind enough to
find a very good, private accommodation for me. I live with a British family and so far my
experience has been fantastic, you know. They are very kind; the family I live with
are very kind. I have all facilities I need, you know, it
takes me just five minutes’ walk to catch the University bus and then I’m in the Uni,
so it’s really, it’s not very different from living in halls. I think I, I, I, it’s even good for me,
I didn’t stay in the halls because I have so many things at my disposal at home. The location, it’s so peaceful. The staff are very helpful; students are friendly;
people are just waiting for you to ask them. We have attended several job, you know, er,
seeking techniques, you know, naming; there are a lot of things about Kingston which I
cannot continue to mention here, but a very, very good thing. I would describe Kingston Upon Thames as a
very beautiful town; it has the river that runs through it and then, you know, all the
beautiful places to see; it has a lot of historical places to go and see. The environment is peaceful. The proximity to London is quite, very close
so you can always go to London, you know, in less than twenty minutes you are in Central
London. Everything London has is, is here like, people
say Kingston is Greater London. I think life as an international student in
Kingston; it’s amazing or fantastic because I, you tend to meet so many students from
different backgrounds, you know, you learn about their culture, you learn about a way
of life and everything, so generally it’s a very good experience. Right from my application the level of response,
you know, support, I got from the University it, it’s outstanding, you know, I got instant,
you know, replies to my emails, to calls; I got all the support I needed, you know. I think Kingston University; it’s a, a very
good place to be. The staff are very helpful. Students are there to support you. The environment is peaceful, you know. Everything about Kingston is so nice; it’s
a beautiful location, you know, beautiful town. So many qualities, I can’t remember right
now, but I think you should come to Kingston University. You won’t regret it. Trust me on that one.
