OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, WE’VE BEEN TAKING A LOOK AT A NUMBER OF TOPICS THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS TO TALK ABOUT BEFORE THEY HEAD OFF TO COLLEGE. MEREDITH BARACK JOINS US WITH MORE ON WHAT CAN BE A TOUCHY TOPIC FOR SOME FAMILIES… ASHLEY… ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND SEX…IT CAN BE AN UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION FOR SOME, BUT IT IS PART OF COLLEGE CULTURE. I SAT DOWN WITH THE DIRECTOR OF UW-MADISON’S CAMPUS HEALTH INITIATIVES AND PREVENTION SERVICES WHO EXPLAINS WHY THE CHOICES STUDENTS ARE MAKING DURING COLLEGE CAN IMPACT THEIR TIME THERE. 46.44 THE TRANSITION BETWEEN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE IS ALWAYS TRICKY DEPENDING ON THE EXPERIENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL, IF THEY’RE FROM AN URBAN COMMUNITY, RURAL COMMUNITY, THERE’S A DIFFERENCE. REGARDLESS WHERE YOU ARE FROM, AND NO MATTER WHERE YOU’RE HEADED, THE FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE WILL LIKELY INCLUDE MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND RELATIONSHIPS. 48.25 THERE IS AN ELEMENT OF FREEDOM IN STUDENTS WHEN THEY ARE ON CAMPUS. AND PEER PRESSURE. SOCIAL NORMS. DOCTOR JEANETTE KOWALIK SAYS BECAUSE OF THAT, PARENTS NEED TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THEIR CHILD AT HOME, BEFORE THEY SET FOOT ON CAMPUS. 50.55 AND THE CONVERSATION NEEDS TO BE ONGOING. REGULAR CHECK-INS, HOW’S IT GOING, HOW DO YOU FEEL. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO TALK TO ME ABOUT. BEING APPROACHABLE IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT. SHE SUGGESTS BEING AN OPEN SLATE AND SEE HOW YOUR STUDENT FEELS ABOUT ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND SEX. 52.33 IF ONE CAN MITIGATE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES DOWN THE ROAD, WHY NOT. HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT WHATEVER DECISIONS YOU’RE MAKING MAY LEAD TO CERTAIN OUTCOMES. INCLUDING BEING KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL, OR LOSING OUT ON POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES. 55.38 WE DEFINETLY WANT TO STRESS THAT UNDERAGE DRINKING IS SOMETHING THAT IS NOT TOLERATED. NO MATTER WHAT, FRESHMAN YEAR WILL BE FULL OF FUN- AS LONG AS YOU’RE MAKING GOOD CHOICES ALONG THE WAY. 59.12 COLLEGE IS DEFINETLY A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR ANY ADULT THAT IS ABLE TO PARTAKE IN IT. LEARNING HOW TO BALANCE, HOW TO TAKE YOUR TIME, GETTING A DEGREE. AND JEANETTE SHARED A STATISTIC WITH ME THAT MAY SURPRISE YOU… ACCORDING TO A SURVEY THE UNIVERSITY CONDUCTED THROUGH ALOCHOL E-D-U… SEVENTY-TWO PERCENT OF STUDENTS HAVE REPORTED AN INCREASED USE OF ALCOHOL AFTER COMING TO CAMPUS.
