International Students Guide: Meet the City of Perth!

LAURA: Perth is a very international city.
So basically you have amazing theatres, you have international festivals, international
concerts. Like I come from one of the biggest cities in Colombia but we never had the chance
to have such international events. There is a beautiful park here, Kings Park, that is
just beautiful views of the city, flowers, plants. You can go and enjoy a very nice picnic.
GONZALO: You can visit places and interact with animals. You can travel around Western
Australia. LAURA: You will love the wineries here, the
wine quality is just amazing. There is always something to do. And of course, the best beaches
in the world. I love here, the culture of sporting and being fit. That’s one thing that
surprised me a lot. How people really like going out running, cycling. So you have to
do it here which is really good for you, because it makes a big balance in your life. GONZALO: The city is a little bit expensive compared to my country, well it’s expensive
compared with my country… LAURA: … at the same time you will find
that you can easily find a job. The salary will be at the same level. So me as a postgraduate
student, I have a visa that allows my partner to work full-time here. So it was actually
very good for us because he could work and on top of my scholarship we could afford to
have a very decent life here. SILVIA: I do believe we’ve got amazing food
in Peru, but over here it’s kind of different, kind of mixture.
GONZALO: Food from other regions, from Asia, from here, I ate kangaroo. It was, I liked. LAURA: All the Asian countries are really close. Very close to Perth. Like really nice
countries like Thailand that you can only see on the TV and you’d never know that you’d
go there. So, I’ve visited Thailand and other countries in Asia and it’s lovely. LAURA: I remember once I went to the supermarket and left my wallet there. And I came home and
I was like “where is my wallet?” And then I came to the supermarket and it was in exactly
the same place I left it. And then I started to realise how different this city was. And
everything I do I feel safe. GONZALO: Definitely the security is one thing
that I’m not concerned here. My wife also, she all the time can wake up early when she
has something to do, like six AM in the morning. We can arrive home late and nothing can happen. It’s a city with a lot of friendly people. LAURA: Everyone is very internationally-minded.
So they’re very happy to help. SILVIA: A wonderful to place to find new people,
friendly, kind, trustful and I just feel like home because of that.
