International Student Spotlight – Aria Duan (China)

Hi, I’m Aria, but my actual name is Jiaqi
Duan. I came from China two years ago, and I’m
studying accounting and I’m about to graduate. A lot of my mom’s closest friends are accountants,
I’ve heard about accounting and this world. This word and this world since I was a kid. I’ve always known that someday I’ll be
in this field, and I did, and I absolutely loved it. I’ve enjoyed basically most of my accounting
classes, they were super fun, we’ve learned how to use excel, we’ve learned how to use
QuickBooks, which is an accounting program that helps you put journal entry in, and pull
out the financial statements really quickly. Now I am using Tableau, which is a really
cool program, and we can translate a big set of data into graphics, and present it to our
clients in a more direct way so that they can get a better understanding of the results. I have to say, all of my accounting professors,
every single one of them, have had a great impact on my life. Most of them are females, they have really
inspired me to be a better woman like them, and they have really inspired me to have a
greater passion for accounting because I’ve seen how great they are and I want to be a
professional just like them. It’s very important for me to look for a
university that makes me feel like I’m at home. That was one of the most important things
that I was looking for in schools as an international student. But, also a good study program was what I
was looking for too, and UK has both. Everyone is awesome. They work very hard. You can see everyone studying very late in
the atrium in the Gatton Business College, and that kind of inspires me to be a better
student. So first, I’ve had a really tough time. The transition was very hard. At first, my grades got hurt very badly. But I quickly realized that I needed help. So, I reached out to my professors not just
one professor, but to all of my professors. They were really understanding of my situation
and they helped me to go over the materials and told me what I could do to be better. My advisor, Ms. Summer Eglinski, she was the
one who’s been there since day one. She knew all of my struggles, and I would
email her and tell her what was going on with my life or just the day, tell her my struggle,
and she would email me back with a lot of advice and try to get me out of those situations
and help me to resolve all of these problems. It’s just the kind of care that they give
you and the understanding that they have for students from different backgrounds that really
makes me feel like, this is somewhere that I want to be to study. So, that’s how I can work on my grades better
and graduate. I’ve always been so grateful for what they’ve
done for me. After a few months, I’ve started making
new friends from work, classrooms, and organizations. I feel a lot better. The culture is more like a family, and it
is really inspiring and intensive and really it pushes you to go further and to be more
successful and to be a better person than you were. Lexington is super sweet. I think it is small, it’s not that big. So you can easily walk downtown with a view
of beautiful houses and everyone is so nice and friendly. I just feel safe and it’s a perfect place
to study. Everyone here is super nice and is trying
to help you out to push you further to be a better person. I think that’s the most important thing.
