International student life at Valparaiso University

Hi my name is Timothy Tessa I’m the
Director of International Admissions at Valparaiso University. Valparaiso is
international students and so if you went in our website it actually says
Valparaiso University an international university and so we pride ourselves on
hosting a great variety and number of international students. We have students
from over 45 different countries and we’ve had students from international areas
since the 1950s. We were the first universities to go into China. We’ve had
exchange programs and study abroad programs since the late 1950s and early 1960s.
And so we really value international students here on our campus. Not only the
diversity they bring but also the different experiences they have with them and how
they can integrate into the classroom experience for all of our students here
at Valparaiso. Well what the VISA is, we are a network of international students,
we do have our American students who have been abroad or American students
who are interested in international students, and just learning about what
it’s like to be international so it’s wonderful for the internationals because
they really get to know American students they also get to learn about
other cultures besides their own and it’s just a beautiful blend just
beautiful mix of different cultures. We’ll have students from Mongolia, China, India,
Germany, France, Brazil, anywhere in the world and we all mingle we all just
enjoy learning about each other’s cultures. We dance, we laugh, we eat, it’s just a great time.
Teacher-student ratio is like 13 to 1 so you have that one-on-one
interaction with the professor and for me being dyslexic a very slow learner
having that one-on-one conversation with the professor actually allowed me to
succeed and become the student that I am today It’s great for international
students I think most international students they come from halfway around the world. One thing
they’re really looking toward- or looking at when that school, is safety and Valparaiso is a very safe secure secluded environment. It’s easy to walk from
campus to downtown to the local markets it’s a self-sustained campus
and so there are plenty of ways to walk around campus if you live next to campus,
on campus you can easily walk to your classroom, to the library, and so it’s
very convenient for international students that usually don’t have a car or a way to get
around. It’s a very walkable campus and safe and accessible. What I have
discovered is that oftentimes American students they want to learn about
international students about their cultures but they often wonder “How can
I learn about this person and their culture from Mongolia or from India?” “How
do I get to know them?” Well that’s what we do it VISA. We have events each month
or even every two weeks even. We keep very busy, is to bring that connection between
American and international students together. I think a lot of Valparaiso
international students come here because of the personal support they get from
professors and it’s a small school environment and so they get the personal
interaction that a lot of students come to like here at Valparaiso. As opposed to just going in the back of the classroom and listening to the lecture, a lot of
students were actively engaged in the classroom activities, in the classroom
discussion, they’re learning from each other in the classroom, they’re
interacting directly with the professor. I like to know that the environment that
I’m going to study in would be a nice calm quiet environment so Valpo gave me
that. There’s a lot of things to do outside the classroom and so I enjoy the
outdoors and so there’s a lot of good outdoor activities, parks, trails, Lake Michigan.
There’s also great cafes, movie theaters local attractions, events on campus. There’s also -we’re only about an hour away from downtown Chicago and so a lot of students will go in on the weekends or on breaks take the train or take
the bus into downtown and do all the cultural activities and excitement
that’s in downtown Chicago as well another beautiful feature that we have
in this part of Indiana are the Indiana Sand Dunes and it’s a really beautiful area, it’s
on the beach, overlooks one of the Great Lakes so Lake Michigan. We have multiple
events on campus to encourage that, so whether it’s living in the residence
halls, going to athletic events, going to music events, in the classroom obviously,
going on study abroad academic trips, throughout the course of the year and even
as your time as alumni there’s lots of opportunity for international students to
integrate completely with the university
